The great refectory, Malbork Castle. The long room has an exaggerated vaulted ceiling, held up by regular slender pillars in the middle of the room. The vault ribs are picked out in dark timber, contrasting with the white plaster of the ceiling, and the overall effect is almost like a forest inside the room.

The courtyard in the heart of the Nasrid palace in the Alhambra, the Patio of the Lions, so called for the fountain with 12 spouting lions at its centre. The courtyard garden (which is being refurbished here) is surrounded by open walkways with elaborately carved arches between pillars supporting the roof.

The thinnest of crescent moons sits high in a deep blue dawn sky. Unlike some sunrises, there's no gentle gradation of colour in the sky, the blue fades only slightly towards the horizon before changing abruptly to an unvarying, light yellow glow, with hints of rays emerging. The bright dawn light silhouettes the skyline running along the bottom of the image, a suburban ridgeline of trees and houses. Just at the far right of the image, on the horizon is a small patchy band of cloud, adding a little texture to an otherwise sparse image, dark, light, dark, with moon.

High view through silhouetted trees of a sea of cloud below. The cloud base is so low over the invisible valley below that all that is visible is the white tops of the low cloud. Overhead the sky is almost uniformly white and clouded also, so that "land" and sky are almost indistinguishable. Everything is white except for the foreground trees, black in silhouette against the bright cloud.

Night has descended upon Ménilmonant. The streets are eerily clear of people and the shops are no longer illuminated, but a little corner resto is serving that bar scene. The awning over that chamfered corner entryway is still extended while all others have been retracted.

An elaborate balcony in Aix where the stone buildings have a beautiful golden glow. The light grey blue shutter is partially closed, letting light into the darkened room. Above the balcony opening, supported by a series of rectangular pilasters, the sculpted frieze shows decorated cow skulls and the remnants of what appear to be a Roman battle ; with strewn breastplates, helmets, and weapons and the remnants of carts and instruments. A budding potted shrub sits alone on the balcony.

An intense, almost uniformly orange dawn sky backlights a suburban ridgeline, silhouetting still-black trees, roofs and utility poles, and a water reservoir, now converted into a house. Overhead in the sky a few almost linear black streaks of cloud add some texture to the uniform orange.

Looking down a steep wooded escarpment into a series of treed ridges and valleys, heavily shrouded in drifting clouds of mist. The mist almost completely obscures the trees in the valleys, dim shapes sometimes visible, while trees on higher ridges stand clear. The scene is lit by monochrome, sepia-toned early-morning light which casts long shadows from trees on ridge lines into the mist below. Although this is a colour image, it is effectively black and sepia-toned white.
