The Arch Linux package manager struggled with the task and I did not get very far trying Nix as a package manager for these. Is there another choice I should be considering?

Jonatan HildénNifty QGIS feature: If you have a raster map image and you know the projection (in this case I recognized it as Wagner VII), you can just use the Georeferencer tool, put in a few points and assign the projection.
