GrapheneOS: Where Licenses Matter More Than People

GrapheneOS could have shipped real accessibility support. They had a screen reader. They had a libre speech engine — one they requested a feature from. They got that feature.

And then they said no.
Because the license was GPLv3.

They’ll ship sandboxed Google Play Services.
They’ll let you install GPLv3 software from their app store.
But a working screen reader for blind users?
Blocked. On principle.

This isn’t a technical limitation.
This is not a matter of priorities.
This is cruelty by ideology — and they’re proud of it.

So here it is. My full public dissection of the excuses, the hypocrisy, and the sheer contempt they’ve shown to the people who need privacy and security most: the disabled.

They chose licensing purity over basic humanity.
I chose to write this.

What is it about guys in big dumb trucks...

#rant #urbanism

Everything calm and chill outside local restaurant as I roll up on my bike.
Guy in big dumb truck pulls over, leans out window and starts screaming "HEY" at obviously busy server on patio.

"WHATS THE ADDRESS? WHAT'S THE ADDRESS HERE?"

Server: "What? Hang on"

Guy in big dumb truck groans, shakes head, pulls away.

Not a fucking clue.

I appreciate you trying to authenticate me.

But my social security number has most likely already been lost by some company who never even got fined.

And a 9 digit number doesn't have "two middle" numbers.

So don't get upset at me when I give you the entire 9 digits.

If you want the second set of numbers, learn how to ask the question correctly.

No matter how good your #tech is, #developers will always be garbage, and catch up to your #phone or #desktop as they don't believe in #optimization and just go:

HEY LOOK, STUFF HAS MORE MEMORY AND PROCESSING POWER, LET'S CRAM A WHOLE BUNCH OF EXTRA SHIT IN NOBODY ACTUALLY NEEDS AND MAKE IT LOOK PRETTY IN THE MOST INEFFECTUAL WAY!!!

Some do, and you folks are doing GOD'S WORK.

Even with 4 gigs of ram on my phone and 8 cores, I still have #apps freeze everything up.

Tonight's fun and games… fixing a Hema HX2+ navigator that seems to have thoroughly got its knickers in a twist.

I might add there's nothing "plus" about this unit. The battery is half the size of the HX2… and this particular specimen has been a lemon from day one.

When we first got it, we tried tethering it to a WiFi network: first the home network (which worked fine with the HX1 and HX2)… nada… "no Internet" it says.

So we try my father's phone (Samsung S21)… nope… "no Internet".

We try mine. Bupkis!

We try my father's again with Bluetooth… that works … s…l…o…w…l…y …

Fast forward, a new OS update comes out. We download their hokey dodgy updater, follow their sketchy instructions, and the device manages to completely brick itself because the downloader assumes WiFi works (it doesn't).

Back to Hema it goes… we get it back.

Tonight… we note it won't start the street navigation application. Starts then crashes. We try updates… it tells us there's an update for the NZ maps (okay, we're in Brisbane but whatever). We download this, nada… it still crashes. We also tried the Australian maps… after a long download session… nope… it refuses to start.

Seriously… the HX1 was quite good, worked well. Just the subscription expired and wouldn't renew. (Software problem.) The HX2 did puffer fish impersonations and sadly I broke the screen replacing that. Still annoyed at myself about it.

The HX2+ should have gone back the day after we bought it, bloody thing has never worked properly, and the new software we found was practically useless at Kenilworth last time we tried it. (Tell it to find a route to Imbil and it just sits there and looks at you stupid.)

I have no idea what these drongos are doing, but their QA is nonexistent. OpenStreetMap based solutions are looking sooo much better now.

Right now, everyone needs to be punk (exclamation point). Fck the US centric world bank. Fck the $. Fck the shareholders who exacerbate the enshitification of our lives. Fck the – for profit – ignorance facilitation machines. Fck the ignorant that had a choice. Supremely, fck the ignorant that had a choice, yet complain that the enshitification is affecting them. #rant #punk #revolution #renaissance

After that useless meeting yesterday, today the other engineers got asked a status update. They just looked at each other like cows look at trains.

After a minute of uncomfortable silence I gave the update.

If your software stores passwords in a way that they can be retrieved, and your software isn't a password manager, your software is broken.

Verifying that a password provided by a user is correct does not require you to store the password. As an industry we knew this in 1978. It has been 0 days since I saw software that violates this.
