What’s getting in the way of maintaining and sharing your research software? 👀

At #SciPy2025 pyOpenSci hosted a Birds of a Feather (BoF) to ask that very question, and the community showed up with insight, vulnerability, and solutions.

From confusing packaging tools to cultural barriers in academia, we break down the biggest pain points and what we’re doing next.

pyOpenSci · Listening, learning, and building together: what we heard at our SciPy 2025 BoFWe held an incredibly informative community session this year at the SciPy meeting in Tacoma Washington. We asked the community what their open source Python pain points were. Learn more about what we learned in this interactive session.

Google Docs2025 Research Software Asia Australia Application Form for Scholarships and Accessibility Micro-grantWe are committed to creating a safe, accessible, and inclusive environment for all participants. To this end, we are offering scholarships for staff or students to participate for free, as well as 10 accessibility micro-grants of $50 AUD to help with internet, headphones, childcare etc. Eligibility for the scholarships will be based on prioritising and maximising the inclusion and participation of people who have been impacted due to the cumulative effects of discrimination on factors such as race, gender, disability, gender identity, financial status, and the intersectionality of that discrimination as well as others not mentioned here. Eligibility for the accessibility will be based on a similar approach. Only participants from Asia and Australia are eligible for the micro-grant. We encourage participants to apply even if they do not think they are eligible as this will allow us to prioritise and maximise diversity and inclusion. All information will be treated in a confidential manner. All successful recipients of scholarships and accessible micro-grants are expected to attend the event after they have been notified of their conditional success. Micro-grants application due has been extended from Wednesday the 23rd July 12pm UTC +10 to Friday the 8th of August 12pm UTC +10. Submissions for scholarships will close Wednesday the 11th of September 12pm UTC +10

Connect and share with other research software folks at RSAA25, online from Sep 17-19.

Keynote, Assoc. Prof. Minh Bui from ANU will discuss their work on IQ-TREE, an open-source tool for evolutionary biology with genomics data, which won the 2023 ARDC Eureka Prize for Excellence in Research Software.

Join us in tackling the latest research software challenges and fostering community collaboration.

🚨 You don’t have to be a software engineer to contribute to scientific open source!

At pyOpenSci, we believe good science needs good software, and that means contributions of all kinds:

🛠️ Code
📚 Docs
🧠 Ideas
🤝 Reviews

Working on a scientific paper and need to quickly insert a citation?

If you’ve used #JabRef before, you might know the “push to application” feature. Now, JabRef supports cite-as-you-write (CAYW)! (Also known as “cite while you write”)

In #TeXstudio, press c three times to open the citation dialog—no plugin needed.
