Jan Wildeboer 😷:krulorange:<p>Question for you!</p><p>What are the first few commands you immediately do after setting up a new Linux/*BSD machine? I don't care if you do it manually or automated with Ansible. I am just curious about what you deem to be the critical first thing :)</p><p>Me:<br>- feed my ssh keys to /root/.ssh/authorized_keys<br>- immediately change /etc/ssh/sshd_config to set<br> * PermitRootLogin Yes,<br> * PubKeyAuthentication Yes,<br> * PasswordAuthentication No.<br>- reboot</p><p>Curious what you do first :)</p><p><a href="https://social.wildeboer.net/tags/SelfHost" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SelfHost</span></a> <a href="https://social.wildeboer.net/tags/Admin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Admin</span></a></p>

Jan Wildeboer 😷:krulorange:<p>Took some fighting to get RHEL10 (Red Hat Enterprise Linux) installed (upload netboot ISO, connect it to the VPS, run installer via RDP as the netcup VNC doesn't do Wayland, connect to it after some struggle with xfreerdp on my laptop) but the installer finished, initial setup is done, letsencrypt certificate installed, firewall configured, SELinux is active anyway, done for now :)</p><p><a href="https://social.wildeboer.net/tags/SelfHost" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SelfHost</span></a> <a href="https://social.wildeboer.net/tags/Netcup" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Netcup</span></a> <a href="https://social.wildeboer.net/tags/VPS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>VPS</span></a></p>

Artem R 🇺🇦<p>fun fact, after initial setup I logged out from my dashboard to see how it works, only to find out that without set email sending service I can not log in back to admin, so I had to do a hard reset <a href="https://indieweb.social/tags/ghost" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ghost</span></a> <a href="https://indieweb.social/tags/blog" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>blog</span></a> <a href="https://indieweb.social/tags/selfhost" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>selfhost</span></a></p>
Artem R 🇺🇦<p>and another issue was emails — I had to use 2 different email sending services. Because for transactional emails I can use whatever provider I want, but for posts I can only use Mailgun — vendor lock <a href="https://indieweb.social/tags/ghost" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ghost</span></a> <a href="https://indieweb.social/tags/blog" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>blog</span></a> <a href="https://indieweb.social/tags/selfhost" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>selfhost</span></a></p>
Artem R 🇺🇦<p>For me the main issue with Ghost was lack of reactions (likes, thumbs, applause, etc). So I can now continue with setting up a new Certificate Authority (CA) as container. (please refrain from replying with "use dnsmasq!" or other solutions. I know what I am doing and I am stubborn. I'm a BIND9 guy. Period. :)</p><p><a href="https://social.wildeboer.net/tags/SelfHost" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SelfHost</span></a> <a href="https://social.wildeboer.net/tags/Homelab" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Homelab</span></a></p>
Jan Wildeboer 😷:krulorange:<p>TIL (Today I learned): If you wonder why your PoE (Power over Ethernet) Splitter fails to power the Raspberry 4 in your homelab, it helps to check the cables again. TL;DR my PoE injecting network switch has 8 network ports that deliver PoE but also two uplink ports that don't. Guess where I put the network cable ;) Solved. And now my Raspberry Pi 4 with Fedora 42 is connected with 1 Gbit/s, PoE powered and can be configured as DNS server :)</p><p><a href="https://social.wildeboer.net/tags/SelfHost" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SelfHost</span></a> <a href="https://social.wildeboer.net/tags/Homelab" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Homelab</span></a></p>
