College Cheques Don’t Bounce! RM’s Val Mabbs Talks to Keith Moon. After missing our first arranged meeting due to an unexpected Radio One Club appearance, the highly effervescent Keith Moon burst into the bar to meet me. The Who are in London again for a comparatively short time as they plan to return to the States in May, when they will be touring with Joe Cocker. “We probably won't do much work here again, as we want to be free to do the kind of things we like," said Keith. “We find the universities here are good to play, particularly as you know the cheque you get won’t bounce! Forty per cent of concert promoters now are losing money, and they try to make up on one week what they lost the previous week — but they never do! After you’ve done a gig you get a guy with a long face come up telling you how he expected the group to pull in a good crowd and you’ve only pulled in 30,000 and it’s so hard to cover his losses. Oh, it’s all so different in America, you don’t get any of that. Of course, the money is very good too, but as the cost of living is high you can spend a great deal of what you’ve earned if you stay there and don’t work for four weeks.” Some of Keith's statements may seem rather pretentious when put down in black and white, but in fact the Who have changed very little personally since their early days. “I don’t really think we’re any different now from when we first visited America,” explained Keith, bouncing about in his seat.
