Retro Markus 🇩🇰🇩🇪<p>Celebrating the Apple Xserve G5! 🚀 Its innovative features and exceptional performance make it a top choice - the System X (aka Big Mac :)) Cluster of Xserve at Virginia Tech even made Top 10 of the supercomputer list in 2004.</p><p><a href="https://bitbang.social/tags/retrocomputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>retrocomputing</span></a> <a href="https://bitbang.social/tags/Apple" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Apple</span></a> <a href="https://bitbang.social/tags/PowerPC" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PowerPC</span></a> <a href="https://bitbang.social/tags/Xserve" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Xserve</span></a> <a href="https://bitbang.social/tags/vintagecomputers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vintagecomputers</span></a></p>

Grant Hutchinson<p>It’s <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/RetroComputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RetroComputing</span></a> Get Rid of Some Goodies Monday!</p><p>Anyone need service parts for an <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Xserve" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Xserve</span></a> G5, Xserve Xeon (early 2009), or <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/XRAID" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>XRAID</span></a>?</p><p>I have a set of new, in box parts* including the logic board, fan array, and power supply for each Xserve, plus the controller and cooling modules for the XRAID.</p><p>I’m willing to let these go for the cost of shipping from western Canada.</p><p>* Items are unused, in the original packaging, but everything has been opened for inspection at some point.</p>
Stephen Hoffman<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://sfba.social/@mvilain" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>mvilain</span></a></span> That depends greatly on what ypu’re doing with that old Mac Pro.</p><p>Given the budget, probably an incremental migration of services from that Mac Pro or <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/Xserve" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Xserve</span></a> to Synology, where Synology supports the needed add-on services. </p><p>I’ve done similar migrations. For those, Synology and <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/Ubiquiti" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Ubiquiti</span></a> together can provide most (all?) needed network services.</p><p>Past that, I’ve used a mix of other network and server giblets. Ghe occasional OpenVMS server too, in the before times.</p><p>For an app needing a small back-end, I’ve implemented my own, built back-end platforms, and would now look at using Parse Platform or similar. </p><p>Haven’t used Synology containers or VM guests as yet, but what I’ve already used as worked as expected.</p>

Welp, I just pulled some old bags from the basement to clean, among which was the old #Targus computer bag my gramma gave me.
How long has it been since I used it?

There was a Hertz rental paper map of San Jose, CA from when #Apple flew me out to talk about the #XServe, a phone cable and a PCMCIA Wifi expansion card (for my #NewtonMessagePad) a F3 key from a clamshell #iBook and some paper clips.

Still an awesome bag, it’s just HUGE.

Can I just get excited about the most stupid #ClassicMac thing I've done in a while?

Behold, my 2008 #Apple #Xserve 2,1 running OS X Ventura 13.3.x, with an RX480 connected via an eGPU plugged into a Titan Ridge Thunderbolt Card?

I had to modify my own .aml file and tweak the Open Core Legacy patcher to get things to work...

I am very happy.
