I keep getting follow requests by someone who calls themself an ethical hacker. ??? I don't think I care to know the difference and I have rejected them twice now. How many rejections will actually suffice? #amwriting #writing #writer @bookstodon@a.gup.pe #books And bye the way, I wonder what happened to #writersofmastodon which used to record fair numbers but now records 0 use.
@SharonBergAuthor @bookstodon Holidays? Good time to hunker down and write
@ChrisBoese @bookstodon@a.gup.pe Yes, well... I am retired, so I can write whenever the muse takes me. Yesterday and today I worked on a story that turned out to be 3,202 words. I can't complain.
@SharonBergAuthor @bookstodon I wish I were retired! Working on planning for it!
@ChrisBoese @bookstodon@a.gup.pe I started writing in Gr 4 & kept #writing into adulthood.My 1st book was published in 1979, the 2nd in 1984. I entered university & creative writing almost stopped. I couldn't write at all when I was teaching. That job consumed me. But I could edit, so I created Big Pond Rumours as an international literary E-Zine (2006-2019), learning book & website design along the way. I retired in 2016 & released 4 books between 2019 & 2020, writing 2+ since. #writing #books #retired
@SharonBergAuthor @bookstodon Ethical Hacking is a valid skill set. They do exist, and are very useful.
But also - if you reject someone they should take the hint. That is bad manners. Irrespective of what they do.
@SteveClough @SharonBergAuthor @bookstodon
FB has a feature so that if you reject a friend request, they can't keep requesting you. There was one person who kept sending me add request for a group I didn't want to join so I ended removing and blocking the contact to end the harassment.
@SteveClough @SharonBergAuthor @bookstodon
How is your cat doing and not doing ?
@HepCatJack @SharonBergAuthor @bookstodon Both well and poorly. At both.
@SteveClough @bookstodon@a.gup.pe I may be too much a sceptic, but it would seem to me that anyone can call themselves whatever they chose. It is up to me to believe them or not, I gues.
@SharonBergAuthor They totally can. But it is a valid designation.
Of course, words are cheap, this persons actions show that, whatever else they are, they are a prick.
@SharonBergAuthor @bookstodon An ethical hacker is someone who does it to expose weaknesses or holes in software security protocols. Many times they'll contact the company or org with their findings, and sometimes are paid a bounty.
@progressiveartist @bookstodon@a.gup.pe How do you know they are really on the good side? And not just saying they are? I am too much of a sceptic.
I'm not a member of the hacker community, so I've no way to tell you that without knowing your persistent follower and doing more outside research about them than I'd care to.
If you don't wish to follow back, don't; if you want to stop the requests, just block them. Or, if their posts and replies look reasonable, you can follow if you choose. You always have the option to unfollow later if you wish.
@SharonBergAuthor
Just block them! I got followed by a guy who was whining that he didn't know what a reply guy was. Didn't bother to follow him although he may not have been blocked.
@SharonBergAuthor @bookstodon ethical hackers are invaluable researchers who find security flaws and report them to the hosts. They’re the people primarily responsible for you not being bludgeoned to death by the *bad* hackers who do things like steal and sell critical information.
You may want to reconsider the follow request.
@undeadbydawn @bookstodon@a.gup.pe Hmm. And why would they want to follow someone as sceptical as me? How do I know it isn't a wolf in sheep's clothing?
@SharonBergAuthor @undeadbydawn @bookstodon Followed you because of this comment.
@farbel @undeadbydawn @bookstodon@a.gup.pe Ahh! I get it. You're attracted by sceptics?
@SharonBergAuthor @undeadbydawn @bookstodon I respect skeptics. I followed because you are an author and you made me laugh.
