Strong agree. This has been a lot of the appeal of Trump to his supporters: the way he does hideous and incompetent things with no apparent consequences is not a bug but a •feature•. He embodies the promise that even the worst white male can walk through this world with total impunity.
His supporters feel like his impunity is something they can share in. For the system to revoke that impunity is thus not merely some political team rivalry, but a direct personal threat.

I came across an article after the 2016 election where they interviewed his voters. “I would do what he does if I had his money.” is almost a direct quote from these people.
