@davidho The Government have added "an explicit warning about potential legal consequences", to the usual travel *advice*.
If it helps, we in the UK haven't considered the US an ally on equal terms since 1942. We hate it when you come round our house and every time we visit yours, all you do is show us your latest acquisitions and tell us racist jokes.
The USA's circle of 'friends' is essentially an entourage of money-obsessed sycophants who whine at each other in private about the abuse and swear that they're going to strike out on their own - none more so than our own (UK) government, which always seems one betrayal away from shouting drunkenly, "BUT I THOUGHT YOU LOVED ME!"
Trump is a spoiled, vindictive imbecile with the training wheels removed, but on the subject of allies, all he's done is to say the quiet bits out loud: he's conducting foreign policy pretty much identically to his predecessors, apart only from keeping up pretences of friendship and equitability. This is a stopped clock moment, and we'll all laugh about it later.

Alien is the term the US has always used to refer to non citizens and non residents.
You are either a 'legal alien' if you are there with the proper paper work or an 'illegal alien' if you don't have the proper paper work.

@NatureMC @davidho American right-wing crazies have been slowly placing these fascists into power. I honestly don't think most voters realised they were voting for ideologues. The language became so hyperbolic (seeming) that even their own constituents thought it was a political ploy and not real. Unfortunately, it wasn't hyperbole, they were serious the whole time.

to do the same. Be warned that you can be arrested, detained and held indefinitely without due process. No Canadian travelling to, or passing through the US, is protected from this arbitrary detention. Even with all your papers and documents in order, if #ICE decides to search your phone, iPad, etc. and discovers articles, comments, discussions that speak against #donald, you are at risk.

@davidho the implications are massive because travel insurance usually does not extend to countries for which a travel warning has been issued by the British government
@peterbrown @davidho I don't think this is the category of warning you describe. It looks like the standard guidance with updated emphasis and detail, not an advisory against travel -- but if I'm wrong, I'd be very interested to get a source for that!

It’s pretty weak, as travel warnings go. I’m waiting for something like: “Travel to the USA is discouraged at this time due to upheavals in the government that have resulted in the detention, abuse, and deportation of foreign visitors. If travel to the USA is required, travelers are advised to consult Special Bulletin FM-2025-027 for additional guidance. Note that all electronic devices such as phones and laptops are subject to examination by US authorities. Criticism of the US President is not tolerated.”
