It might be really helpful if we started and contributed to a specific hashtag (something like) #ClimateChangeGardening to chronicle how garden veg/fruit are not coping with the changing seasons and offer substitutions. A lot of people are having major issues with asparagus bc of sudden hot temps in spring but there are others. We can find solutions together.
@jblue I thought that was a mangosteen for a moment there.
@jodmentum I wish!
@jblue We're just establishing our garden in a poor dry sandy and slightly acidic soil in a changing climate. We're aiming for a permaculture inspired food forrest with lots of perennial herbs, shrubs and trees an annuals in between. We're starting with native, undemanding plants while we build soil with woodchips, green manure and compost. We aim for a multitude of species and varieties and select for resilience. Long way to go still. #ClimateChangeGardening #ArschDerHeide #RealLifeSolarPunk
@jblue I only started gardening this year, but my grandma said that everything is out of season and not growing like it used to!
@jblue Ursula Vernon, probably a decade ago now, had an illustrated blog series that was mostly gardening in which she once simply said "These are the seasons now," and I've never forgotten it since.
But ClimateChangingGardening would certainly be more explicit.
Half my figs didn't ripen before various birds/ insects tore into them seeking water. We hovered in highs just below 110° for most of July in my part of (historically 8a) north Texas with overnight lows in the stiflingly humid mid-80s.
@cwicseolfor wow, that’s intense
@jblue The RSC-BBG is working on growing plants from the Levant in Pittsburgh

@jblue I've been having issues with tomatoes due to excessive summer heat; my fix was to plant WAY earlier so fruit could set on before the triple digits. It's working out. I'm also planting varieties that are better for drought, heat, and for where the zone is heading. #ClimateChangeGardening
@jblue Shadecloth saved my Eggplant and zuchs from the days over 100 f. A few years ago we had 113 and 115 days that killed shrubbery, so I got shadecloth. I'm in 8b. Seems like it used to be 7b or so. Mulch helps a lot to keep moisture in the ground.
@Wendelin thanks for sharing can I ask what state you’re in?
@jblue Sw Washington state, just north of Portland Oregon.
@Wendelin was that really unusual heat for the area?
@jblue Very. We get 100s infrequently and not a string of them. Or used to. My raspberries are having a second crop now, which is early for it, my asparagus was late, everything is a bit confused.
