This thread is about plants that I tried this year and won’t try again next year as well as ones that did really well.

East coast North America, zone 8/9, rainfall 120cm.

19/ Shiso

These get weedy and invasive. They don’t need extra water or fertilizer and grow really well. Survived the heat fine and didn’t notice any damage from tropical storms. Rabbits leave it alone and there’s not much insect damage.

@jblue@mastodon.world You're lucky! They grow well here too but don't seem to mature seed so far from competitive.

@jblue I was given some seeds for this a few years ago, and I wondered if it might be invasive here. Seeds weren't viable, so 🤷. How do you use it in the kitchen?

@docdieterlen I’ve been busy this year so have just thrown leaves into salads and curries. The flavor of the leaves is minty and peppery. It especially goes well in Thai curries. Red shiso can stain and is used for coloring in Japanese cooking. It’s how real umeboshi gets its color (I’ve seen the pickles artificially dyed on sale - this is an abomination).

It does get really invasive. I’ve seen it growing in nature reserves too.

@jblue good to know. I guess it just had an invasive vibe to me.
