Hey #NativePlant growers, what new species are you trying out this year?
Let’s inspire and encourage each other.
@jblue I picked up a Dune Tansy at the UCSC Arboretum shop and it's still alive!
I'll be growing closer to my home (VT) the seeds collected from way behind the barn...
Wild Bergamot
American Vervain
Not from seed/dug up volunteers...
Plantainleaf Sedge
@EDVARDS Monarda contains thymol, which is responsible for the spiciness AFAIK, and which has known medicinal uses (including being the main active in ingredient is some mouthwashes).
The Native American Ethnobotany Database notes that the Cherokee, among other tribes, are documented using Monarda for a ton things, including treating colds, so maybe you read about it from there or from someone referencing one of the entries on the database.
@jblue tomatoes
@jblue Angelica venenosa! I'm growing it from a root cutting. Despite the name, the plant is actually edible, and I'm excited to try it once it gets going in the growing season.
I'm also going to try growing Osmorhiza longistylis from seed. I'm hoping it goes well!
@jblue
Front yard meadow in Western Washington (Puget Trough): I spread seed each fall and little in early spring.
New seed this year: Castilleja hispida - Harsh Paintbrush
Given up in this year (slugs get it all): Nemophila menziesii - Baby Blue Eyes
@jblue. We saved seeds from Golden Alexanders. The small pollinators enjoyed their long season of yellow blossoms. We will grow more of these in 2025. #pollinators, #nativeplants, #minnesota, #growyourown.
@jblue I nurtured fireweed for a second year
