With the incoming FBI director, we can expect a revival of COINTELPRO.

Since this publication, #Proton is no longer considered secure. They lied about collecting users’ data. (Besides the CEO saying sketchy things.) Tuta Mail is more highly recommended for encrypted email.
@jblue Uh, remember all that bullshit about 'stovepiping" when we got stuck with "the patriot act"? THAT was the revival of #cointelpro and was the whole point of the baby-Bush regime, enabling the surveillance state.
@jblue Interesting article. What is sad about it is the fact that any kind of protest or activism has become a de-facto crime.
@jblue there's an important distiction that needs to be made here. proton did not collect the IP for the Swiss activist that was charged until they received a valid court order forcing them to, at which point they noted it on the next login. at no point did they share anything private, because contents of mail are fully encrypted.
tuta would also do the same if it faced a valid court order from their government. the idea that any service would refuse a court order is absurd.
@jblue the wrong here was done by the Swiss authorities, and proton protested that court order publically as soon as they were able. they followed Swiss law, as they must.
that isn't to say they they would cooperate with the US feds, as they haven't in the past when the FBI wanted access.
@cryptagion the wrong was not telling users that it collects and stores users info.
The CEO has repeatedly stanned Trump since the election, T just hired two J. Edgar Hoovers on steroids (director and chair) and has been violating court orders to enforce illegal EOs, any activist would be an idiot to still use Proton.
It doesn’t matter what P says its policy is. They were dishonest about data it collects before and the CEO is too much of a Trump/republican syncophant.
@jblue they don't collect data. As I stated, they did not have the data when the court order was handed down. They do not collect data normally as a matter of operating. They were required to BEGIN collecting data on ONE person who had a VALID COURT ORDER to expose his identity.
therefore, their claim to not collect data is still true. Proton is not in the United States, and they are not under US jurisdiction. they are not required to oblige the US government in any way.
@jblue you are misinformed on this topic, and your points are demonstrably wrong. furthermore, there is nothing stopping Tuta from also giving your data to the US, and it's *even more likely than with Proton*, since Tuta is located in Germany, which is part of the Fourteen Eyes, which collaborate with US intelligence.
Your data is *less safe* with Tuta than it is with Proton.
@cryptagion Tuta says that once your info is deleted it is gone and cannot be retrieved. They haven’t been taken to court yet so we don’t know if what you say is true. But given recent anti-T and Musk comments from Merz on election interference and Tuta saying that your data is encrypted on their servers and the encrypted search index is stored on your device, I’m more confident with Tuta.

Anyone who repeatedly kisses T’s ring is untrustworthy.
@mdalves @cryptagion I don’t know if you are in my comments in good faith, a troll or deactivist but you literally sent a medium article. Anyone can self-publish on Medium. Clearly P wants to do damage control but the damage is done.
His comments were demonstrably false, T has no intention of breaking up tech monopolies. He knows the power they have and uses this threat to control them. See his sovereign wealth fund and pushing to sell TikTok to Oracle.
The only reason any business person would have to publicly flatter T is for potential quid pro quo.
We have seen time and again that people who flatter T are willing to break/bend rules for him.
Right now, T fired the top general at the joint chiefs and replaced with an unqualified stooge who said he would “kill” for T. (Dan Kaine). He hired two deranged maniacs to lead the FBI, one of whom swore that he would go after political “enemies” in the courts.
Also freed Jan 6 insurrections as well
as violent white supremacist militants, not long afterwards repeating the Napoleanic quote “He who saves his country commits no crimes.”
Yesterday we saw men violently attack and tie up a woman who went to a town hall to question a Republican leader on cuts to Medicaid.
Estimates suggest that over 200k fed employees have lost their job since taking office and many of these are in roles to weed out corruption.
Musk recently insinuated he would send the IRS after political enemies.
The list goes on and on. Anyone working in political activism has to be extremely careful with their communications. If you don’t know why, research COINTELPRO. The situation is going to be much worse.
The CEO made absurdly false statements about Republicans and T. Any American would be alarmed and not use P’s services. The pattern of public flattery to quid pro quo has been established by over 8 years in politics.
Replies to this comment, I expect are in bad faith and users will be blocked.
@jblue @cryptagion do you see this @protonprivacy ? I have already reported the disaster in your PR.
@jblue @cryptagion Good faith. Yes, a Medium article. And yes, I question myself about continuing or not with my Proton Unlimited subscription.
@jblue @cryptagion
just use googlemail its nice it even has builtin ai
@ChadMcTruth @jblue hey, Google is also located in Germany, so surely it's as safe as Tuta is from the prying eyes of the US government!
