I raised my kid as a free-range kid. He is self-initiating and got himself into special classes at school on his own (filling out his own paperwork). He would go into the city for concerts with his friends at 14 years old.
As a kid, I remember being out of the house and doing my own thing before I was eight years old. (Okinawan jungle with Habu)

@cmthiede -- I suppose there are people with so little independence and freedom and self-confidence that they believe these deficits are normal and that those limitations should be forced upon children, "For their own safety" when it seems to be a projection of fearful adults versus the reality, given these kids exist and thrive in spite of societal condemnation and warnings from those with said deficits above.
@jeffowski well, let's be clear. Nobody "wants" to hang a key around their child's neck and hope for the best. But, if they can't afford a #nanny and their parents need just as much care as their children, there aren't a whole lot of options!
