GiselleI really want to buy a pillow/bolster for bobbin lace making, but they are awfully expensive. Shouldn't be too difficult to make myself but I don't think I have the needed materials. It's done now, but we couldn't share the info before our lace competition. The competition was a particular "red thread" to use. I went to Rockport one day and was struck by this famous red fishing shack, and that's how we got here. I did not win this year, but I love these challenges. GiselleUpdate in <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/BobbinLace" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#BobbinLace</a> adventures (practice phase). I made this little leaf, just need to figure out how to tie off the last few threads so it doesn't look awful from the other side. Don't know how I managed the hole but let's not be perfectionist. It worked surprisingly well to throw out threads as this narrowed, I was having more of an issue about where I initially added new pairs (hence the hole I think). I had drawn the leaf outline and then just made it up as I went along. It was fun.

mem_somervilleI've tried fatter linen (60/2) and finer linen (90/2). The 90/2 looks closer, and you can see I also tried that with a heavy outline thread (we call that gimp, sorry--I know). But the pinholes were bothering me. I can get rid of them with some pulling on the lace in all directions. I assume that would be like a washed item might be treated? And why the pinholes aren't apparent in the museum one. Anyway, more testing to do.
