This isn't comprehensive and I'm not being paid for it. It's just some options to think about.<a href="https://toot.cat/tags/Smashwords" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Smashwords</a> is great for folks who like to read <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/IndieAuthors" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#IndieAuthors</a>. They also publish things that Amazon things are too naughty for you and they have one of the better author payouts as far as I can tell. <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/Kobo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Kobo</a> has a subscription service which is competitively priced with Amazon's <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/KindleUnlimited" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#KindleUnlimited</a> and, because they don't require exclusivity, you can get a wider variety of books in <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/KoboPlus" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#KoboPlus</a>.Your local <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/library" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#library</a> may also partner with a service like <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/Hoopla" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Hoopla</a>, <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/Libby" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Libby</a>, or <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/cloudLibrary" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#cloudLibrary</a> to offer you access to free ebooks and <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/AudioBooks" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#AudioBooks</a> and the writers still get paid with those options.

Libaries, however, are (I think) getting strongarmed by content farm companies: I can download Overdrive files as mp3 and listen at my leisure, without having to have an active WiFi (or worse, mobile) connection. But <a href="https://c.im/tags/SimplyE" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#SimplyE</a> and <a href="https://c.im/tags/CloudLibrary" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#CloudLibrary</a> are rent-seeking trash that won't let me time-shift or device-shift the books I'm checking out. Imagine I'm 400 pages into a 500 page book on my tablet and just downloaded it to my phone... Really, tap the right side 400 times? That's their user interface?

gwimoOne of the biggest complaints I have about <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/CloudLibrary" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#CloudLibrary</a> is its web interface and how it doesn't sync with the device apps. I can switch from my phone to my tablet with ease. Not so if I plan to listen to it on the website. I know...I know... "Gwimo, who listens to <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/audiobooks" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#audiobooks</a> on a website?" I do, Jordan. I do!

But my local <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/PublicLibrary" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#PublicLibrary</a> system uses <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/CloudLibrary" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#CloudLibrary</a>. When the change was made from <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/Overdrive" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Overdrive</a> to <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/RBDigital" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#RBDigital</a>, I was ok with it. <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/Overdrive" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Overdrive</a> confused a lot of our patrons & it was a headache trying to explain it to them. But <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/CloudLibrary" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#CloudLibrary</a> is just wonky. It's not bad. I guess it's user-friendly, but it's not good, you know?

Johnston (it's acts as a prequel to <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/DungeonsAndDragons" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#DungeonsAndDragons</a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/HonorAmongThieves" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#HonorAmongThieves</a>, giving you a backstory for Doric).ANYWAY, does anyone else thing CloudLibrary sucks as a <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/LibraryApp" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#LibraryApp</a> or is it just me? I wish the library system had gone with <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/Libby" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Libby</a>, but nope.
