Letterform Archive<p>J.C. de Widt, untitled example of original micrography, 10.63 × 12.75 in, Amsterdam, 1780.<br><br>Our last post showed the largest letters in the upcoming 10 × 10 for 10 exhibition. This item contains the smallest letters—by far. Micrography (or microcalligraphy) is the art of creating images using tiny writing. This kind of calligram has a long religious history based on the devout observation of the second commandment against images.</p><p><a href="https://typo.social/tags/10x10for10" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>10x10for10</span></a> <a href="https://typo.social/tags/Micrography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Micrography</span></a> <a href="https://typo.social/tags/Microcalligraphy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Microcalligraphy</span></a> <a href="https://typo.social/tags/Dutch" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Dutch</span></a> <a href="https://typo.social/tags/Calligraphy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Calligraphy</span></a></p>

MARBAS at Princeton<p>Today at Manuscript, Rare Book &amp; Archive Studies (MARBAS) we're highlighting the source of our little draconic logo, which comes from the codex British Library, Add MS 21160. This is a 13th/14th century manuscript of the Hebrew Bible and it contains multiple examples of micrography: an art form that creates representational or abstract designs from miniature Hebrew letters. This was a distinctive technique created by Hebrew scribes in medieval Christian Europe and the Islamicate world.</p><p>Our micrographic dragon appears on folio 19r, alongside Genesis 1:24–25's description of God's creation of the land animals. More examples of micrographic creatures abound through the manuscript -- take a look at its digitized reproduction on the British Library's Digitised Manuscripts webpage ( <a href="https://www.bl.uk/manuscripts/Viewer.aspx?ref=add_ms_21160_fs019r" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">bl.uk/manuscripts/Viewer.aspx?</span><span class="invisible">ref=add_ms_21160_fs019r</span></a> ) to see more! </p><p><span class="h-card"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookhistodons" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>bookhistodons</span></a></span> <span class="h-card"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/medievodons" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>medievodons</span></a></span> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/Manuscripts" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Manuscripts</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/HebrewManuscripts" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HebrewManuscripts</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/Micrography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Micrography</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/Medieval" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Medieval</span></a></p>

Simon<p>A calligraphic masterpiece, an 11-inch high piece of parchment that contains the entire biblical Song of Songs in Hebrew micrography (written in tiny letters). It is signed by the Lithuanian artist/scribe, Baruch ben Shemaryah, 1794. It renders the entire Song of Songs as a work of art, in letters that are at once text and illumination. Shir (song) is the central word around which the text revolves. - Yale University Judaica Collection <a href="https://campuspress.yale.edu/judaicacollection/2013/11/05/song-of-songs/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">campuspress.yale.edu/judaicaco</span><span class="invisible">llection/2013/11/05/song-of-songs/</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/SongofSongs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SongofSongs</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/micrography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>micrography</span></a></p>
