Tired of CEOs making decisions with their social media platforms that you don't agree with? Looking for a secure place to post and host art? Wishing you were using a service that was future-proofed against capitalist nonsense?

If you're like me
(an Internet user who remembers the Tumblr exodus of 2018), then you're probably feeling very abandoned and betrayed by social media and art sharing websites as of late. Poor management decisions have led to a state in which the platforms we use can no longer meet our needs as users.

There are a few alternatives I'm seeing people flock to -
BlueSky, Itaku, and Cohost, amongst others. These are all privately owned entities whose main user base consists of people who either cannot use Twitter any longer or who have chosen to leave for greener pastures.

They are businesses profiting off of the mismanagement of Twitter, and there are no safeguards in place to ensure what's happening to Twitter doesn't happen in any one of those sites in the future. Do you want to have to change primary social media platforms every 3 years? Do you want your data and habits and interests sold to make these companies a profit? Do you want your text and media used to train AI? Do you want lax moderation that allows for hate groups to flourish on a platform?

I don't. So any privately owned social media website is off the table for me. What does that leave me with?
I was delighted to be able to find Mastodon, and its various sister platforms collectively referred to as the Fediverse.

A privately owned social media service hosts all of its information on a single server that you can only access via official websites and apps. This is what gives them exclusive control over what you see and how you see it, as well as what rules govern those posts. This is also why they can hosts ads - by being the only place you can go to see their content, your eyes must go to a page they control, and they can put things on that page that make them money.

However, the Fediverse (Mastodon, Misskey, Calckey, Pleroma) works by linking many independent smaller Servers - sometimes called Instances - together in a large web of interconnected social media sites. This means you can see and follow people from any site you want, and by "federating" (joining together) in this way a net of smaller servers can compete with a privately owned larger one. ->

A few thoughts for new arrivals & anyone else really, plus the always fragrant topic of enshittification...

Firstly welcome to new folk!! We're happy you're here.

2) You made a good choice moving out of the corporate media silos. I want to explain why I think so, as I believe it'll shortcut you possibly years of lost time.

3) If you do choose another corporate silo, you will end up back here, trying to avoid the same problems but just escaping from the new corporate silo where you lost all time investment in 5+ yrs time.

Enshittification of corporate social silos is baked in. Twitter was on the decline path long before Musk. Disinfo, aggression farming, algorithms, ads. Many corp social silos have died or gone comatose already. Google+ Digg Myspace. All corp silos decline as they age. It's the same cycle happening to all the corporate silos, and yes that includes all the new shiny 'we're different this time, please come in to our enclosure' ones.

If it has shareholders, value to users will decline slowly then eventually steeply. 100%
📉

Enshittification:
1] Offer free service to attract users.
2] Degrade user experience in favour of advertisers.
3] Degrade ad experience to capture value for shareholders.
4] Farm captive free work userbase. Farm captive sellers advertisers & businesses. They're being exploited, but don't want to lose their time investment & their social graph by switching platform. Extract bulk of value for shareholders.

This is the enshittification cycle. Every platform with shareholders slowly cannibalises it's user experience, it's advertiser experience & business user experience.

Musk is just a more visible data point on the enshittification curve.
Twitter is a 1 node silo, with enshittification profit pressures. This renders it entirely vulnerable to 1 or a handful of individuals whose concerns are profits, not users, let alone society.

#Facebook 1 node silo. Shareholders.
#Digg 1 node silo. Shareholders.
#PInterest 1 node silo. Shareholders.
#Post 1 node silo. Shareholders.
#Google+ 1 node silo. Shareholders.
#Tribel 1 node silo. Shareholders.
#Reddit 1 node silo. Shareholders.
#Spoutible 1 node silo. Shareholders.
#LinkedIn 1 node silo. Shareholders.
#Instagram 1 node silo. Shareholders.
#TikTok 1 node silo. Shareholders.
#Bluesky acts like a 1 node silo, is built/funded by people who made their money from 1 node silo enshittification bait'n'switch. If it really wanted to be different it's priority would be connecting existing user owned & operated FOSS networks. It isn't. So treat with extreme caution. Also Jack Dorsey & his behaviour with Musk etc.

...luckily...
There is a Solution. You're looking at it. Fediverse or something with the crucial properties of Fediverse. Multi-platform, multi-node, migration enabled, user owned & operated, Free Open Source Software (FOSS).

Where users can migrate freely tween platforms & nodes, can run own nodes & can even create new forks of the software.

Fediverse has grown to 23,000 nodes. It connects millions of users. Using 30-40 social platforms already.
No ads.
No algorithmns.
No microtargeting.
No promoted post ranking.
No centralised conversation shaping.
No VCs.
No CEOs.
No shareholders.
No corporate profit drive.
Best moderation I've seen in 40yrs online.

Twitch shat the bed last time so I didn't get to finish stream, but hopefully this time there are no technical hiccups and I actually get to talk about what I wanted to (like the #ratelimitexceeded at #twitter )! And additionally, I should be able to finish up Pokemon Fire Red Rocket Edition this time so next stream and the stream after will be something different (although still Pokemon related because I'm on my ROM hack arc)
