Server monitoring 101

I have been running a @yunohost server for ~5 years now, but there is one question I have never been able to answer: how loaded is my server? 👀

I know, I am a terrible sysad (actually, I am not a sysad, at all), because I have no idea how to determine:

  • if my server is running smoothly
  • if the server is under stress, and why
  • what applications are the heaviest
  • if there is the possibility of installing more apps
  • when peaks of stress are happening and what is causing them

In general, I would like to understand the fundamentals of server monitoring: what are the most critical metrics and what do they mean? What parameters do I have to keep an eye on?

I installed Prometheus and Grafana, but then I realized I have absolutely no idea what to do next… Do you have any suggestions?

I thought about watching some video tutorials, but I would not really know how they would relate to YunoHost installations.

Please, if possible reply in this thread of the YunoHost forum, so that we can keep track of this useful information also for others in the future. 🌻

Once I will have learned the basics, I would be very happy to write some pointers about this in the documentation, or an essential YunoHost Monitoring tutorial.

YunoHost Forum · YunoHost Monitoring 101Hi everyone! I'm curious to hear what others are #SelfHosting! Here's my current setup:

Hardware & OS

Infrastructure & Networking

Security & Monitoring

Authentication & Identity Management

  • Authelia (Docker): Just set this up for two-factor authentication and single sign-on. Seems to be working well so far!
  • LLDAP (Docker): Lightweight LDAP server for managing authentication. Also seems to be working pretty well!
    #AuthenticationTools #IdentityManagement

Productivity & Personal Tools

Notifications & Development Workflow

  • Notifications via: #Ntfy (Docker) and Zoho's ZeptoMail (#Zoho)
  • Development Environment: Mostly using VSCode connected to my server via Remote-SSH extension. #VSCodeRemote

Accessibility Focus ♿🖥️

Accessibility heavily influences my choices—I use a screen reader full-time (#ScreenReader), so I prioritize services usable without sight (#InclusiveDesign#DigitalAccessibility). Always open to discussing accessibility experiences or recommendations!

I've also experimented with:

  • Ollama (#Ollama): Not enough RAM on my Pi.
  • Habit trackers like Beaver Habit Tracker (#HabitTracking): Accessibility issues made it unusable for me.

I don't really have a media collection, so no Plex or Jellyfin here (#MediaServer)—but I'm always open to suggestions! I've gotten a bit addicted to exploring new self-hosted services! 😄

What's your setup like? Any cool services you'd recommend I try?

Just update for all #RaspberryPi fans and users: my Raspberry Pi (Linux) monitoring and dashboard tool has now been tested by running for multiple months and it works well on multiple devices. Plus it works for any Linux device able to run Python, not just RPis. If you are in need to monitor status of your #RPi, check it out: ambience.sk/raspberry-pi-monit

Continued thread

First I've tried dmon.io. It's a nice project that's available for free, but I couldn't get my email address verified so that was a blocking issue. I only saw email notifications and no integration with Discord or Slack, so that would be an issue for me as well. It's too basic for my needs at the moment, but might be improved in the future.

I've sent my feedback to the developer and will continue my search.

Just found out that my server monitoring service #Nixstats was sold a couple of years ago. No message from the owner and no replies on support questions since. I've been using them since the beta stage in 2017.

So I'm looking for alternatives now:
- hetrixtools.com/
- dmon.io/
- 360monitoring.com/ (new owner of NixStats)

I'll be using it to monitor server load for 3 servers (maybe a few more in the future)

A status page function would be a plus!
