Still Mad About CD Prices<p>For <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/MusicWomenWednesday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MusicWomenWednesday</span></a> here's Shotgun Down the Avalanche by Shawn Colvin, plus a <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/request" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>request</span></a> - If anyone has a recording she made of this song in the early 90s, distributed on "sampler" CDs & cassettes given out as promos, I would be most grateful if you point me to it. I first heard this song on such a CD ("Summer Sampler", maybe distributed by X96, the alternative station in Provo, UT). Compared to later versions I can find (not including this acoustic take, which is lovely) It was less produced, a little more raw, and more emotionally impactful. John Eckman<p><strong>Shawn Colvin, Uncovered, 2015 on Fantasy</strong></p><p>This is actually at least Colvin’s second album of covers, ~20 years after she put out Cover Girl (1994). Some well known tunes here – Paul Simon’s “American Tune,” Gerry Rafferty’s “Baker Street,” and Tom Waits/Kathleen Brennan’s “Hold On” – but also some lesser known songs – Robbie Robertson’s “Acadian Driftwood,” Graham Nash’s “I Used To Be King.” </p><blockquote><p>For many years, as a performer in clubs and bars and coffeehouses, all I did was play songs written by other artists. I did not write, although I longed to. </p></blockquote><blockquote><p>Eventually I was able to. After I got a recording contract in 1988, it seemed fitting that at some point I ought to pay tribute to those songs that sustained my career for such a long time. So, in 1994 I made a record with Steuart Smith, and it was aptly called <em>Cover Girl</em>. </p></blockquote><blockquote><p>Twenty-one yearrs later, even though I am primarily known as the composer of my material, I’ve never tired of learning covers, and I had more than a few in the hopper. It seemed fitting to get together with Ssteuart once more and record a follow-up to <em>Cover Girl</em>. </p></blockquote><p>Not sure where I picked up my copy – normally i track this but did not seem to for this one. I'd long been a fan of Shawn Colvin, first heard her on KMTT The Mountain and saw her at the Ballard Backstage in 1991. But KT Tunstall put on a great performance, stole the show! guyjantic has moved!<p>It's been 25 years or so, and I've never told anyone this:</p><p>Shawn Colvin's (gorgeous) "Shotgun Down the Avalanche" doesn't need drop D tuning. </p><p>The only tab I could find back then--and it seems the only/easiest one now--tells you that you have to drop your E string to D. </p><p>Pfah! the alternative is that you fret two adjacent strings two frets apart. You know, like you always do.
