IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: aren’t you glad that we don’t (yet) live in a world where on-device client side surveillance triggers report you to the police for using words like “bomb” or “uranium” in Signal & WhatsApp chats?

If such things did exist they would currently be swamped by people discussing global news:

In case you missed it: “By Default, Signal Doesn’t Recall”

It’s rapidly getting to the point where if you want to have conversation privacy you must implement screenshot-prevention (mobile) or DRM-protection (laptop) in order to prevent surveillance; and then get users to enable those features.

Signal MessengerBy Default, Signal Doesn't RecallSignal Desktop now includes support for a new “Screen security” setting that is designed to help prevent your own computer from capturing screenshots of your Signal chats on Windows. This setting is automatically enabled by default in Signal Desktop on Windows 11. If you’re wondering why we’re on...

I’m watching all of these broadly self-congratulatory RCS announcements in the light of the Apple TCN Case, desperately waiting for the zeitgeist to swing over to “…what do you mean my national carrier can disable E2EE for *me* ?”

It’s one of those frequent civil society moments where you are simply waiting for the “Let’s stick it to the American Capitalists!” -community to shut up & calm down long enough for other (infosec, safety, privacy) voices to be heard.

WhatsApp joins legal action against UK demand for Apple ‘back door’

WhatsApp has not received a TCN itself, a spokesperson said. WhatsApp has previously threatened to withdraw its service from the UK if any attempt was made to undermine its encryption.

Caroline Wilson Palow, legal director at Privacy International, said WhatsApp’s intervention “demonstrates the breadth of impact of these orders, which could potentially undermine services used by billions of people.” She added: “This rising tide of dissent cannot be ignored.”

Government using national security as ‘smokescreen’ in Apple encryption row | Computer Weekly

Senior Conservative MP David Davis told Computer Weekly there was “no credible case” for the government to refuse to tell Parliament how many notices it issues each year to telecoms and internet companies.

“The government is being dishonest in its use of ‘national security’ as a smokescreen to avoid telling the public how often it has ordered tech companies to hand over data or undermine encryption,” he said.

WhatsApp backs Apple in its legal row with the UK over user data | BBC News

WhatsApp has told the BBC it is planning to support Apple in its legal action against the UK Home Office over user data privacy.

The messaging app’s boss, Will Cathcart, said the case “could set a dangerous precedent” by “emboldening other nations” to seek to break encryption, which is how tech firms keep their users’ data private.

IMPT: STREAMING TODAY at 1000 Eastern, 1500 UK, 1600 Paris: US Gov’t obliquely discusses *sanctioning* UK for attempting to backdoor Apple iCloud

Apparently the goal is to discuss the CLOUD Act as a means to spank the UK for trying to spy upon Americans. Given that this all was probably sanctioned by the NSA, if nothing else this is an amazing exercise in doublethink.

The hearing, “Foreign Influence on American’s Data Through the CLOUD Act,” will explore the ramifications of the data access agreement between the United States and the United Kingdom under the Clarifying Lawful Overseas Use of Data (CLOUD) Act and identify areas of potential reform. It will also examine the UK’s secret order that requires Apple to build a back door into its products to allow access to all Apple users’ content uploaded to the company’s cloud, including encrypted content, and detail the importance of encryption for security and privacy.
