Torbjørn Wikestad<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.xyz/@brunopostle" class="u-url mention">@<span>brunopostle</span></a></span> I did a bit research. <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/Revit" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Revit</span></a> has an extension for <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/energymodeling" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>energymodeling</span></a> and options for <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/gbXML" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>gbXML</span></a> export through <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/Dynamo" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Dynamo</span></a>. <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/Rhino" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Rhino</span></a> has <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/Honeybee" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Honeybee</span></a> and <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/Ladybug" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Ladybug</span></a> as energy extensions to <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/Grasshopper" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Grasshopper</span></a>. <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/BIMServer" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>BIMServer</span></a> can extract geometry from <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/IFC" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>IFC</span></a> and serialise it as gbXML. <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/IDA" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>IDA</span></a>-ICE imports IFC directly. What about <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/TopologicSverchok" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>TopologicSverchok</span></a>, can it extract geometry and export it as gbXML?</p>
Torbjørn Wikestad<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.xyz/@brunopostle" class="u-url mention">@<span>brunopostle</span></a></span> I think the conversion tool could be improved and packaged, and I am motivated to contribute to this nonetheless, if only to learn more of <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/IFC" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>IFC</span></a> and <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/gbXML" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>gbXML</span></a> . It should be relevant, according to the thesis by MGVisschers. Maybe he has a good overview on the need for such a tool today, if he could be reached. Anybody activly working with <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/energymodeling" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>energymodeling</span></a> should know. My guess is that proprietary <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/BIM" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>BIM</span></a> tools has <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/gbXML" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>gbXML</span></a> export. Info could be inquired at <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/osarch" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>osarch</span></a> .</p>
Bruno Postle<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.world/@towi" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>towi</span></a></span> A <a href="https://mastodon.xyz/tags/BonsaiBIM" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BonsaiBIM</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.xyz/tags/gbxml" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gbxml</span></a> exporter would be really easy with the way the ifcgbxml tool is currently written, but I'd like to know if the output is valuable first, there is no point in adding features that nobody uses</p>
Torbjørn Wikestad<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.xyz/@brunopostle" class="u-url mention">@<span>brunopostle</span></a></span> An export to <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/gbXML" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>gbXML</span></a> from <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/BonsaiBIM" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>BonsaiBIM</span></a> would be a good enabler for cost-effective design analysis.</p>
Torbjørn Wikestad<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.xyz/@brunopostle" class="u-url mention">@<span>brunopostle</span></a></span> I don&#39;t know about the relevance of <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/gbXML" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>gbXML</span></a> , beside it being used by <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/energyplus" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>energyplus</span></a> / <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/OpenStudio" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>OpenStudio</span></a> . From the thesis of MGVisschers, I get the impression that the format is supposed by all building energy simulation software. And I&#39;ve seen there is already a well developed gbxml package on <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/pypi" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>pypi</span></a> . To me, it seems obvious there should be a developed package for conversion between <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/IFC" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>IFC</span></a> and gbxml.</p>
Bruno Postle<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.world/@towi" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>towi</span></a></span> How practical is it to design a building in <a href="https://mastodon.xyz/tags/BonsaiBim" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BonsaiBim</span></a>, or use it to fix up an existing <a href="https://mastodon.xyz/tags/IFC" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>IFC</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.xyz/tags/BIM" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BIM</span></a> model, generate a <a href="https://mastodon.xyz/tags/gbxml" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gbxml</span></a> model, and then either get useful design feedback, or calculations that can be used to prove the design?</p>
Bruno Postle<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.world/@towi" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>towi</span></a></span> cool, what I don't know is how much <a href="https://mastodon.xyz/tags/gbxml" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gbxml</span></a> is used in the building industry, are there proprietary or otherwise better formats? What would a <a href="https://mastodon.xyz/tags/IFC" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>IFC</span></a> to gbxml to building energy-use calculation workflow look like?</p>
Torbjørn Wikestad<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.xyz/@brunopostle" class="u-url mention">@<span>brunopostle</span></a></span> I thought we could start a discussion here on the development of a Python package for IFC-to-gbXML-conversion, with the aim of making it available on PyPI and Conda. By having the discussion here, we might attract the interest of other contributors. </p><p>You&#39;ve already done great work on your fork of MSVisschers&#39; original repo.
