What interest might the Trump admin have in Greenland? Clearly, the President himself couldn't point to his own country on a globe, but what about his handlers?
Open the attached image and zoom in. It's from The Greenland Mineral Resources Portal, "an entry point to all available information about mineral resources and occurrences in Greenland".
As you can see, the island is a veritable treasure trove for extractive industries, with resources including zinc and nickel.
Mystery solved.
"Some of the world’s richest men are funding a massive treasure hunt, complete with helicopters and transmitters, on the west coast of Greenland...The climate crisis is melting Greenland down at an unprecedented rate... A band of billionaires, including Jeff Bezos, Michael Bloomberg and Bill Gates, among others, is betting that below the surface of the hills and valleys... are enough critical minerals to power hundreds of millions of electric vehicles."

The security concerns is rather bad excuse, as USA already has several bases in Greenland, and could have had more simply by having asked. Denmark would have been thrilled to have had them.
Not anymore, ofc, but in alternative reality branching soon after 2015.
@iju During that widely-reported phone call with the Marmalade Menace, Denmark also offered to cooperate with US mining operations and grant the Americans (presumably, limited) access to Greenland's resources. To cut them a deal, basically.
All rebuffed in no uncertain terms. The President wants Greenland, full stop.
