David Njoku

This is a long article so I'll give you some crib notes:

* The majority of people do not think we live in a racist society.

* (PS: The majority of people in this society are white.)

* Only half of white America thinks racism against Black people is widespread.

* (PS: half of white America thinks racism against white people is an issue.)

@davidnjoku absofuckinglutely racist, and the richer you are the worse it gets...

@davidnjoku Or do a majority of white just pretend to think racism against whites is a problem? I grew up white trash, where that skin shade was the only asset most folks had. They totally knew it protected them in a million different ways. They only had to go three blocks south to the all black community that bordered ours to know the difference. They know. They just don't want to give it up, cause then...what do they have? Nothing

@juliehuz
I think it's middle class people who are more likely to think this way. From the middle up it's easy to never really see how badly people can be treated for no good reason and how the pecking order works.

@cshlan According to exit polls, that is not the case.

@juliehuz
I'm not convinced there's a total overlap between people who think there's racism against white people and votes for Trump. I think there are plenty of people voting for Trump who are racist but don't believe racism exists at all.

@juliehuz
There are plenty of people matching that definition who voted for Harris, too.

See also the ones who call themselves colorblind...

@cshlan Although impossible to really tell on sentiment as I've never seen them run the cross tabs that way in a sample size large enough to be significant

@davidnjoku A very good article. But it is about the UK, not the USA. I am 100% certain that the same thing applies in the USA. In fact, I know first hand that it does, and have seen supporting - at least on the continuing reality of racism. But this article is about the UK and contains no opinion polls or studies or even narratives from the USA.

@GarLipow I'm in the UK so it's all very relevant for me.

@davidnjoku Your post kept mentioning "White America" which might mislead some people to think that the article linked was about the United States.

@davidnjoku Thanks for posting, that's a really good article - I may well pick up his new book!

@airadam Me too.

I've read him a few times in The Guardian and I've always been impressed.

@davidnjoku Wow. That is a good article. I want to read the book, now.

@davidnjoku And so half of white people conveniently ignore science; the ones that are taking over.
You know, to some degree the next four years aren't really going to be that much of a change - same old racist shit, but that doesn't mean it isn't bad. Somehow we need LASTING change. It's frustrating that all the elections are nail-bitingly close, election after election. Something needs to happen to make people realize that it's actually better for everyone if we treat each other as equals.
