@jeffowski@mastodon.world

That's a biiiiiiit of a stretch: don't really know anyone who takes Uber as an alternative to public transport. Taxis? Sure: Taxis have historically been unreliable and definitely lacked trackable availability or arrivals at either the rider or destination.

@jeffowski And to also undermine the definition of employment, so that every job will become a "gig" with no benefits, workman's comp, unemployment insurance or pension.

@12thRITS @jeffowski The cab companies were already doing all that and worse with their "leasing" arrangements that made drivers independent contractors but still imposed substantial obligations upon them. Uber was a much better deal for the drivers, especially at the beginning.

@jeffowski would you mind adding alt-text? 🙏 I would love to boost this

@justpeachy @3wordchant -- What amazes me is how lazy people are that they want everything done for them.
What is social media?
It is the sharing of ideas. What you're saying is, "because the content isn't exactly as I want it, I will NOT share an important idea that I AGREE with." How fucking INSANE is that? Instead of applying the and then spread the content you agree with, you are here complaining.
Fuck both of you, because your stance is virtue signaling devoid of actual virtue.

@jeffowski what I'm saying is more like "because the content isn't using the bare minimum accessibility tools the platform provides, I will NOT share anything"

Maybe examine the ableism in expecting people with disabilities to do more work – clicking 3 buttons (edit post / edit image / OCR), is *less* work for you than anyone else, and editing the original post makes things significantly easier for people with impaired vision — and in using "insane" as an insult.

Have a nice day…

@justpeachy

@3wordchant @justpeachy -- But I DO come back and do the Alt-Text. The technology and being able to move content and apply the alt-text from phone interfaces simply sucks and makes this task nearly impossible. If I am on the go, this is the only way to push content.
What IS ABLEIST to the MAX is to be able bodied and COMPLAIN to people who are providing you with content on this platform about Alt-Text INSTEAD OF HELPING AND DOING THE ALT-TEXT. Talk about "ABLEIST".

@jeffowski then say "alt text coming soon" in the post 🤷‍♀️ How are people meant to know you didn't just forget? (and wow solidarity for whatever awful day you're having that's causing this torrent of aggression and abuse) @justpeachy

@3wordchant @justpeachy --

You just wrote MORE to defend your shitty hypocritical virtue signaling bullshit than it would have to just do the and share the meme you say you agree with.

Thanks for continuing to show how much of a shitty hypocrite you are.

I can't see how you don't see you're the asshole here trying to AGAIN DICTATE how I use Mastodon. You are literally what's wrong with Mastodon.

@jeffowski and it's your choice to see this as a complaint. I didn't do work that you can do much more easily and effectively yourself, you could still have seen it as a constructive request @justpeachy

@3wordchant @justpeachy -- What also amazes me is how people like you who bitch about the Alt-Text will share plenty of stuff with REALLY BAD alt-text that does not actually describe the image.
You are so ableist that you are sharing content with such bad or NO alt-text without checking the alt-text yourself.
That's fucking sad, and again, you're virtue signaling without actually having anything virtuous presenting.
Go look at the and get involved instead of being a hypocrite.

@jeffowski and go on, I'm curious, what have I boosted with bad alt text? @justpeachy

@3wordchant I’m always very curious about why people assume that caring about alttext automatically = virtue signaling. Very strange assumption to make. And what is happening when people refuse to include it or rant at people who ask for it? Is that like- villain signaling?? 🤔

@ReneeWestberry where do i vote for "villain-signaling" as neologism of the year 2024? inspired 👏

@jeffowski @3wordchant I won’t argue with you. I was feeling lazy when I posted that. I should have just done it instead of complaining. I usually do, promise! 😅

@jeffowski

Nothing that can’t be fixed by upping the frequency of their ripoff surge pricing.

@jeffowski the first ride share I took was in NYC in 2013. It was the same price as the taxi, but it was easier, I knew the price up front, the car didn’t smell, and they let me tip on credit card. I’d do it again. #GroundLink

Did I mention they were also Lincoln town cars instead of cabs?

@CloudyBlake -- LOL... And now you can see that they take a major loss of billions most years because you were getting it at a discount to destroy other transportation industries.

@jeffowski I'm ok with them destroying the smelly cab industry with rude drivers and refusal to deal with credit cards.

Funny thing, was just in NYC again last year and tried to get cab and was again subjected to attitude and massive upcharge for using cc.

(for the record, haven't had any issue with cabs in other cities)

@jeffowski @rberger this I’ve been pointing out for years. It’s amazing how many folks are oblivious to this.

@jeffowski When we take Uber, it is almost always to get TO the train station or the airport. There isn't any bus service here.

Taxi companies are almost never unionized.

@jeffowski so, every trip in an Uber bleeds the finance industry dry?

@RichSPK -- and help them destroy other transportation industries.

@jeffowski
No one was praising taxis until the alternative was venture capitalists.

@jeffowski what I really dont like about these stances are they are just as corrupt as a corporate stance. An honest approach addresses the fact that greed cuts both ways. grew up in the era where it was greed union members that destroyed unions, strike every year just cuz. killed my future because they didnt want to believe what would come. Uber never had a chance if taxi industry wasn't so lazy and greedy. uber gets a lot right. I like the drivers, cars and app vs sloppy disregard for cutomers

@johncc it’s easy to verify this at investor.uber.com/financials/ and it does not seem to be true (uber is still a shitty company though)

investor.uber.com Uber Technologies, Inc. - Financials

@anton interesting! You made me do some digging. That screen grab seems to date from Feb 2018 as best I can tell, so is referring to 2017 where Uber lost $4.5 billion, so it's about right for the time. That's not their worst year ... in 2020 they lost $6.7 billion and in 2022 they lost over $9 billion! As you say, a shitty company.
