Various #University #professors investigate the phenomenon of rising #aggression and #violence at #theatres and #music events in #Britain and the effects of changing #social values / #CultureWar although these problems have plagued "lower end" music events for decades (more so when #alcohol and #drugs reduce inhibitions) - its why we have had #bouncers at #nightclubs and #raves for years
@vfrmedia This is a shocking article(but not surprising), I really do believe that we’ve come along way to accepting that we’re all equal but we still have a lot to do
@CosmicBlaze the more worrying aspect is folk who bother to get tickets to a theatre these days (when there is cinema, telly, social media and so many other forms of entertainment) tend to be more affluent and better educated, its like at least some are deliberately doing this to prove a point..
@vfrmedia you’re right about the cost of theatre and concert tickets. The people doing these things must be attending the shows that offend them just to spout their views because the majority of audiences are there to enjoy the performances and support theatre and music , it’s like the article says they feel like they have a right to be abusive but thankfully they are still in the minority!
@CosmicBlaze also with "rave-type" music events (some friends still DJ and organise them) promoters are now expected to be prepared for everything from overdoses to sex assaults and acid attacks and to deploy appropriate numbers of security staff and work with the Police (even though they aren't fond of cops at all) - whereas until now theatres are seen as "more civilised spaces" and could be viewed as "soft targets"..
@vfrmedia It is worrisome and requires response from government!
@CosmicBlaze to a great extent its a local licensing issue - Councils maybe need to assist venue owners with training and warn theatre promoters (who tend to live in a progressive middle class bubble) they should be as prepared as those organising "loud" music events or running a busy town centre pub (maybe give theatres access to Townsafe radio schemes if they are not on there already?)
@CosmicBlaze I used to be a DJ and rave organiser myself, on the music scene we have been dealing with this sort of trouble for decades (it is indeed a minority cause problems, but they can still do a lot of damage). Originally there was a certain level of vigilanté action - which I'm not suggesting should happen at the town panto! - but over the years as folk matured they have learned to put on safer events (and in some cases hold their noses and work with cops/council if need be)
