The UK has been backsliding in its support for the LGBTQ+ community
They recently lost rank on the Rainbow Europe Map and the atmosphere for queer people isn't great right now
Why is the ball being dropped, and how can things get back on track? Here's what needs to be done
Access to healthcare
Gender-affirming care saves lives, it changes lives, and it has a huge impact overall. In the UK people have to bypass gatekeeping and jump through far too many hoops just to receive the help they need.
It's in the NHS' framework that care should be provided within 18 months of referral, yet trans people face YEARS of waiting just for an appointment, that's even after you get onto a waiting list. This care can so easily be more accessible, yet it isn't. This has to change
Trans youth
In order for the UK to stand as an ally to the LGBTQ+ community, ANY help for youth, more specifically trans youth, has to happen.
There is currently next to nothing for those under 18 in need, and the government always shies away from helping.
Healthcare is not available, mental health support is even harder to get, support groups are often private entities that can also receive no government funding. LGBTQ+ youth are up against every barrier right now, ones that can be removed
Non-binary recognition
Right now non-binary people have no legal recognition whatsoever in the UK. They're forced to pick a box that does not represent them accurately and be eroded legally on documents and paperwork. This is such an easy fix, and it's not happening.
#banconversiontherapy
Legalisation has been promised for years and is still yet to be seen. This barbaric torture needs to be ousted for all, with no exceptions or caveats, but the government is dragging its feet.
We need a comprehensive ban, and NOW

Stability, political safety and legal sanctity
The current climate for queer folk in the UK is hostile at best. There are constant threats to the rights of the community and there is no societal security to existence.
Recently, the EHRC recommended removing trans folk’s legal protections rendering them at risk from abuse in the workplace, and in wider society.
This is the perfect example of constant tenterhooks people have to live on. Once again, this can so easily be fixed. Guaranteeing security and protection can let LGBTQ+ folk live with certainty and safety.

Action on hate crimes
Hate crimes are on the rise, big time. There is a systemic distrust that hate crimes will not be investigated and people have little security in authorities getting justice for minority groups

Action needs to be taken by authorities to ensure hate crimes are taken seriously, adequately investigated, and prosecuted. Until this happens, security will not be felt for trans folk and distrust will continue to grow, alongside crimes against minorities
Education and representation
Various bigoted protests have taken place in recent years against LGBT education in schools, drag shows and more. Education stands to create a beautiful and diverse world where everyone can thrive. Yet this is not encouraged. We need to be encouraging education on these matters for all walks of life.
Similarly, representation can be one of the best things for any minority group. Where are trans people in positions of power? Where are the trans people who are being listened to? Being heard, their perspectives being shared? Visibility can make change, big change:

The media
Media outlets have been undertaking a vendetta against the LGBTQ+ community in recent years with no journalistic standards being upheld. Misinformation is allowed to spread far and wide and no one is being held accountable for the slew of vitriol slung at trans people, it’s about time they are.
ANYTHING
Yes, anything needs to happen. The government have been sat on its hands for too long. Nothing has changed for trans folk, and when something finally did (Scottish reform), it was blocked.
SOMETHING needs to happen to safeguard and protect LGBTQ+ folk, and nothing will change until action is taken.
It’s not all doom and gloom, infact this thread is here to highlight just how easy change can, and hopefully will, come. Change doesn’t happen overnight but initiatives can be started, and real change can be heralded easily. We’re hoping it does
So, whoever ends up inside number 10 Downing Street, are you going to stand up for LGBTQ+ people, or just pretend to?
