Hans on the Bike

I didn't know a carbon monoxide sensor only lasts ten years. I don't even know how to dispose of it. Do they all end up in the landfill in ? That is a lot of waste given we have around perhaps 250,000 homes in Ottawa?

@Hansonthebike Did you learn when one in your home started shrieking to remind you it had expired? 😀

@uxmark that is exactly what happened.

@Hansonthebike I recently learned that they have something radioactive within them, I think the hardware store will take them for you. Don’t throw in recycling! (like i was gonna do 🙃)

@Centretowner @eljojo

Sadly, it appears to go in the regular garbage, radioactivity and all.

With 250,000+ households replacing this every ten years, that would be minimum 25,000 CO detectors in our waste on Trail Road in , that is if they have only one detector in a household.

@Hansonthebike in Victoria, Capital Regional District recycles them at Hartland landfill

@Hansonthebike If you have a very old drafty house, you might not need one!

@arthurgron well, I am not going to take the risk, even though I lived without one for 50 years. I slept basically next to the heating system when I was a kid.

@Hansonthebike I suspect that they made houses with old oil heaters extra drafty to dissipate the smell.
Or perhaps coincidentally if you choose the less expense oil heater option you also choose the drafty single pane wooden windows.
Can't believe how insulated they can make houses now.
