Do I have to give another talk on how push notifications work? With @Mer__edith of @signalapp spreading lies and news outlets like @heiseonline amplifying their nonsense I feel like their is a lot of confusion out there on how push works. Google’s push notifications aren’t delivered by fairy dust and don’t consume any battery.
TLDR: You can de-google your phone. Install Conversations. It is the only app running in background. It will use #UnifiedPush to wake up other apps like Tusky and Ltt.rs.
@daniel @signalapp @heiseonline The number of rude, misinformed comments I get--here especially--from people who clearly have no experience developing & maintaining a high availability comms service that people actually use is astounding. I can't tell if it's rigid ideology--unwillingness to acknowledge the sorry state of the tech ecosystem due to a personal investment in a fading FOSS libertarian dream, or misogyny, or genuine/willful misunderstanding, or some combo. But it's exhausting.
@Mer__edith@mastodon.world @daniel@gultsch.social @signalapp@mastodon.world @heiseonline@social.heise.de I don't know which one is the main reason but "man explaining things to me" definitely amplified this
@Mer__edith @daniel @signalapp @heiseonline Aaah... I'm sorryyy to hear that... that sucks... You're doing great work!! I exclusively use Signal to chat with family; it's an invaluable part of my social network.
@Mer__edith yeah Mastodon definitely has a problem with condescending dickhead FOSSbro reply-guys, I've seen a lot of them replying to people I follow on here
@COMPU73E @Mer__edith Feels like a given in a social network of this kind. Fedi isn't Twitter, but y'know, similar. Also some people are just assholes.
@Mer__edith @daniel @signalapp @heiseonline There may be some misogyny involved. But myopically egotistical engineer syndrome has existed on tech forums forever, from hacker news going back to slashdot and beyond, where gender is often undisclosed. Smart people saying not-so-smart things because they see themselves as universal problem solvers.
@Mer__edith @daniel @signalapp @heiseonline
Immediately playing the misogyny card.
And then your white knights jump in to defend your honor
@Mer__edith @daniel @signalapp @heiseonline i sometimes have the feeling there are just two types of people on Mastdon: The purists “Richard Stallman” types, and the “anything goes” ones. Not much in between. There seem to be a high number of the former. To protect the “purity” of Mastodon and are automatically against any challenges of the status quo, thus stifling any major developments or improvements. Just my 2p.
@FrankEndrullat @Mer__edith @daniel @signalapp @heiseonline
wow, I sure hope they are not _actually_ like Richard Stallman
@Mer__edith @daniel @signalapp @heiseonline Isn't that just classic 'reply guy' behaviour though?
(They should just re-label the Block button "Has this person got Dunning-Kruger syndrome?".)
@Mer__edith @daniel @signalapp @heiseonline Wow! And that on Mastodon.
But then, I've already used the block option on Mastodon a few times.
BTW, absolutely astonishing how many people just can't care s... about WhatsApp and how they are being tracked.....
I just suggested someone (Dutch, former communist) he actually should request his BVD (predecessor of the AIVD) dossier..... I have the feeling his dossier might be quite a few pages as a former journalist at De Waarheid (Dutch Pravda)...
@Mer__edith @daniel @signalapp @heiseonline The new "temporary" AIVD and MIVD law will help new dossiers to be more detailed and comprehensive.
@Mer__edith @daniel @signalapp @heiseonline i learned and expanded my understanding of effective technical efforts when i understood why signal makes the tradeoffs they do; the way signal always chooses the sustainable approach over the flashiest technical or the most ostensibly "decentralized" one is a paradigm i can trust and rely on and it's why i've continued to contribute to the signal codebase itself where i can because i see how the team never succumbs to peer pressure and that's how we can can trust signal to stand tall even against governments
@Mer__edith @daniel @signalapp @heiseonline
Just remember there is a silent majority of users contentedly using Signal to actually communicate with family and friends. My whole family uses it as our main messenger, even though most aren't technical.
@signalapp @Mer__edith @heiseonline @daniel huh?
a fading FOSS libertarian dream
So you’re actually actively interested in promoting solutions that hurt users’ privacy by not being FOSS?
Go away.
