We ran a Reddit survey, and the results are shocking:
publishing scientific papers is prohibitively expensive.
$3K – $7.5K for open access in reputable journals
Top journals (e.g., Nature) charge $9K+
Even mid-tier journals cost $2K – $4K
PhD students rely on lab grants, while independents pay out of pocket.
Science is becoming pay-to-publish, blocking access to knowledge.
We need decentralized, affordable publishing.
@implabinash With respect and alliance: This is not "shocking" as many of us have been aware of this for a long time now - most who have been in any type of academic science for even a short time are directly aware as we all publish. What is shocking is how for so long all of us in science and academia have gone along with and rolled over to the for profit publishers (many of whom make bigger net profits than major oil companies)
It's shocking because, we are currently building a platform for researchers in which the publishing cost goes down by thousand times while giving same amount of citations, downloads and recognition.
That's why we are doing all these research surveys on the first place.
