Jabuticaba (red hybrid, escarlate) 🌱🧵

TL;DR
-compact shrubby tree
-bring indoors in freezing temps
-needs fertilizer
-extremely productive
-doesn’t need pollinator
-delicious nutrient-dense fruit
-fruit has short shelf-life so…
-methods of preservation

@jblue Brilliant thread, thanks. WP have an article:

"The fruit ... typically measures 3–4 cm (1.2–1.6 in) in diameter." -- bigger than it looks in images.

Several suppliers in Portugal found -- unsurprising considering its connections with Brasil -- Inc this one: 6eu for 6 seeds + post

@wavesculptor the vendor doesn’t say what cultivar it is. That’s really important for home growers bc some trees take more than 8 years to bear fruit. I know of one guy whose Plinia didn’t start bearing until after 14 years.

The fastest to bear fruit: red hybrid (3-5 years), escarlate (3-5y), Plinia phitrantha (3-5), aureana (6), coronata (5-7), obera (5+), azeda (6+), Myrciaria glazioviana (3-5) and probably a few others.

@jblue thanks, I have search page still open, will check others.

on that timescale, and seeing its know about amongst brasillans here, I'll ask around for cutting material!!

@wavesculptor I think rarepalmseeds (German vendor) might sell good cultivars from time to time. There is also a Dutch vendor that sources seeds from fruit farms in Suriname (I think?) that sells different varieties of Jabuticaba.
