@tc_morekindness @MissConstrue Seriously: who was surprised by this? We keep pulling money out of our school systems, we keep teaching kids to pass tests instead of actually learn. Kids have their faces in cell phones before they get to their teens, parents take no active role in their children’s education. We pay our teachers next to nothing and then require them to buy supplies for classes. What the fuck did we think would happen?
But yeah, let’s cut taxes.
@mlanger @tc_morekindness I’m fairly sure that my daughter’s learning disorder was undiagnosed for so long because she is a voracious reader, and diagnostics are not designed for kids who read at 10 grade levels above their assigned level.
And the tests, all of which is because Pearson bribed Bush, has been a thing I’ve failed against since it started. The Iowa assessment, used since the 60s, and administered at like 1st, 5th and 11h grade were great national metrics for how everyone was doing. But was it making money for anyone? It was not. Current testing regime is obscene.
@mlanger @tc_morekindness This came across my feed this morning. I was sharing it to my next door neighbor, who is a teacher, and I thought it fit here too.

@MissConstrue @tc_morekindness It’s absolutely HORRIBLE what they expect from people who just want to TEACH our kids. I still can’t believe that classes do fund drives to buy basics like markers and paper.
A friend of mine taught in an AZ school with classroom dictionaries so old the word “Internet” did not appear. I did a Go Fund Me for the class to buy them 25 new dictionaries. That should NOT be necessary.
@MissConstrue @tc_morekindness I remember being told in 5th Grade (early 70s) that I had scored the highest statewide in a reading test. I was reading at 11th grade level.
Teachers had all kinds of tools they used to help us read better and faster. I guess it just doesn’t matter anymore.
It’s a crying shame because kids will never get ahead if they can’t master the basics of reading and math. But maybe that’s what the powers that be want? Ignorant peons?
@mlanger @tc_morekindness They absolutely do. Party like it's 1399, a return to feudalistic states with uneducated peasants that have no rights and are easily disposable.
@MissConstrue @tc_morekindness The few kids that manage to get out of school with the knowledge they need to move forward may be able to join the elite — if they play their cards right.
@mlanger @tc_morekindness Oh, we won’t have public schools for long. Or libraries which belong to the commons. Everything will be subscription based. The Enlightenment is over. The Dark Age has dawned.
(I may be a little depressed about the state of humanity.)
@MissConstrue @tc_morekindness I am very depressed but I’m trying really hard not to think about it.
@MissConstrue @tc_morekindness I did a presentation at the local high school in Arizona about 15 years ago, at the height of my writing career. It was 11th or 12th grade and I was brought in as a speaker to talk about careers in writing. I was SHOCKED at how few of the 20-25 students in the class actually paid attention. They were mostly on their phones or chatting with each other. How do teachers deal with that nonsense?
