WordPress is kissing rings -- and other things:

@taylorlorenz points out WP's eagerness to prostrate itself before Trump's propaganda ministry.

@paulashby @taylorlorenz wow

I know Automattic had its issues but I was under the impression that Wordpress itself would diverge a bit? I can't remember the details of Automattic's stake in the company etc.

This is insane. So glad I bailed for #BearBlog. If I ever need a CMS I'm looking to Hugo or Ghost.

@xavier_hm @paulashby @taylorlorenz wordpress.org is wholly owned by Matt Mullenweg, the CEO of Automattic, who it also turns out is the only active board member of the wordpress foundation. There is absolutely no clear separation between any of these entities as has become increasingly clear in the past three months or so.

@paulashby @taylorlorenz@mastodon.social more like 14wordpress

@paulashby @taylorlorenz@mastodon.social kissing o rings

@paulashby @taylorlorenz Bonus points for Matt pretending that WordPress VIP could land that contract without him having heard about it

@paulashby @taylorlorenz I guess this makes sense after discovering what shithead mullenweg is

@paulashby @taylorlorenz

Ugh. As if I needed yet another entry in my "Wordpress sucks" file.

@paulashby @taylorlorenz

Ugh.

What are some good alternatives? Almost signed up for one today to post my book reviews (since I need to get off Goodreads)

@foggy @paulashby @taylorlorenz there's bookwyrm for book reviews specifically, it's federated on ActivityPub. For blogging I just started a Ghost website and it seems to be going mostly ok. Neither of those are a fully fledged CMS like WordPress but there are a TON of those out there for those who need them

@alter_kaker @paulashby @taylorlorenz

Looked at BookWyrm before, not sure if I was into it at the time, but the Fediverse is a huge sell.

Never heard of Ghost, I'll check it out. Thanks a bunch!

@foggy @paulashby @taylorlorenz Ghost is also working on an ActivityPub integration, by the way

@paulashby @taylorlorenz hmm looking for migration options now..

@paulashby @taylorlorenz OK, that does it. I was trying to decide if I wanted to learn PHP again to create a CMS based website instead of static generation and was thinking, not really but Wordpress is just the thing everyone uses...

Nope. Gonna go with C++ one. There's a time and place to be practical and this ain't it.

@paulashby @taylorlorenz What does this actually consist of? Do they just provide the backend for whitehouse.gov or are they applying Trump-style fascism to how they interact with others who use their software?

@paulashby @taylorlorenz@mastodon.social

Fucking yikes

And stupidly store text blobl on SQL db, among wrong decisions, and has lot of security holes :/ There are far better and efficient alternatives with staitc sites generators like Zola or Hugo.

CC: @taylorlorenz@mastodon.social

@paulashby @taylorlorenz I'm assuming this will come with the side goal of asking the government to attack WPEngine.

@paulashby @taylorlorenz
Shouldn't we be saying the latest company to embrace fascism

@paulashby @taylorlorenz

Trump will have to get a perineum piercing, so there is no question about which ring to kiss.

All he ever wanted was to bring other rich people down to his level of petty fraud, and then have them worship him for his 'genius' (lack of conscience). Easiest man in the world to manipulate, if you can stomach it, and afford it. Oddly, we may come to depend on the Chinese routing money through the Saudis to moderate him, their experience with dictators will come in handy.

@paulashby @taylorlorenz I really expected better of Wordpress. They've changed.

@paulashby@mastodon.world @taylorlorenz@mastodon.social

So, what we're saying is that the WhiteHouse.gov web site is going to suffer defacement (or worse) on a regular basis.

@paulashby @taylorlorenz@mastodon.social

this is so completely unsurprising.

@paulashby Matt goes for everything that gives him attention. 😭

@taylorlorenz

@paulashby @taylorlorenz just checked and wow yeah this is real. incredibly unfortunate because I was really enjoying the activitypub plugin. looks like I'll have to crack my knuckles and design my own blog. been a hot minute since I got down and dirty with web design and I know nothing about back end but desperate times call for desperate measures.

@paulashby @taylorlorenz Considering what an utter douche Matt Mullenweg has been recently, this doesn't surprise me in the slightest.

@paulashby @taylorlorenz

Time to find a new content management platform — bye bye Wordpress.

@paulashby @taylorlorenz WordPress only survives because of a rich community of indie developers who write themes and plugins. Mostly for free.

Mullenwag seems intent on pissing on them repeatedly.

@paulashby @taylorlorenz "website transactions used to take months?"

My ass. I used to know the guys that wrote the old whitehouse.gov and it took seconds.

@paulashby @taylorlorenz

The final nail. Think I saw an alternative in my toot stream over the weekend

*disappears down the search rabbit hole*

@paulashby @taylorlorenz I'm guessing there are a lot of nauseous contributors right about now.

@paulashby @taylorlorenz is mullenweg himself in charge of the wordpress twitter account?
