In the essential folk music book, "Baby, Let Me Follow You Down," there is a story about Cambridge MA folkies traveling and coming upon a Southern country fair. The musician playing at the time was Doc Watson. One of the Cambridge guys couldn't believe he had never heard of someone this talented. He asked where else does Watson play. The answer was, He doesn't play anywhere else ... he's blind. The Harvard Square folkies then helped put Doc on the road and in front of diverse, appreciative audiences. I heard him sing to an audience of over 3,000 at the University of Maine. He showed that he was well grounded in traditional material but was not at all afraid to perform the latest songs. Too bad Guitar Pilgrim hasn't released a video about Doc's picking style. He has done nearly everyone else. It seems to me I've seen a video of Tommy Emmanuel presenting how to play "Doc's Guitar." Doc and Merle were really amazing.

Danny Gatton - Topic

Fast, accurate, and played with feeling, as done in some passages here, is a rare combination; but then, Danny Gatton was a rare player. The tune, itself, is relatively slow. Contrast what you hear on this track with the franticness of "Fingers on Fire" on his "Unfinished Business" album.

Danny Gatton was one of my all-time favorite guitarists, matching talent with nimble fingers. For some more of his picking, search Mastodon on the dannygattor hashtag.

instagram.com/reel/C4-hE2ROEvF I have a special bond with the guitar that takes me back to my days in Israel.

I remember starting out in a group class, led by this incredibly talented instructor. He developed a unique approach, totally different from the usual;

He could see the frustration of beginners, agonizing over how long it took to play a single song.

So, he did something revolutionary – he flipped the teaching method on its head. Imagine this: by the second or third lesson, we were already playing entire songs. Dosens of then. It was like he unlocked a secret door that led straight to the joy of music, bypassing all the usual drudgery

And then there’s the performance aspect. He believed in the power of playing in front of others from the start, tackling directly the common fear of transitioning from private practice to public performance

What's your relationship / special story with the guitar?
