Nice to see this guy again now that I'm back home.
Now that it's winter he is spending most of the time sleeping, but is still coming out every now and then for a drink and a brief look around.
Geckos! Spotted loads of these tonight in Padova, hanging out near lights waiting for moths. iNaturalist reckons they are Moorish Geckos (Tarentola mauritanica). Quite large, by gecko standards.
@eclectech @hollie That lizard is very tolerant of my nonsense.
@eclectech @hollie It was probably the snakes with hats thing that inspired me to make a party hat for my lizard for his 1st birthday.
I got the scaly sausage out of his enclosure for a check up this evening. He is at least partially brumating (hibernating) now so I'm not seeing him out and about very often, but I did know that he shed his skin recently and I wanted to check that he got it all off. Just as well I did as, very unusually for him, he did have some stuck shed on one of his toes and the tip of his tail.
Doing all of this was made considerably more difficult by Jerry's very strong preference for draping himself across the back of my neck or perching precariously on top of my head instead of hanging out where I can see him properly.
The new t-shirts might be the most I see of Jerry for a while. The weather is decidedly autumnal in Sydney now, and I think Jerry has decided that it's time to brumate.
My lizard couture has arrived! The model doesn't look too impressed, but then he looks unimpressed by everything.
OK, blueberry design ordered for the kid and one each of the first two designs (the tongue and the yawn) ordered for me. Fully leaning into being "that lizard guy".
The kid asked for a design of Jerry holding a blueberry, and while I was looking for a photo for that I found another good yawn pic. Now I need to decide which of these four designs to actually turn into t-shirts for me and the kid.
I reckon it's time to refresh and extend my personal collection of lizard couture. I've knocked together a couple of new designs using some more recent photos of Jerry.
When Jerry is out of his enclosure pretty much the only thing that will stop him constantly trying to wander off to find a nook and/or cranny to hide in is his fleece guinea pig bed. He will, sometimes, just hang out in there, and he may even accept some chin scritches while he's doing so.
An overdue return to #LizardPosting: I spotted this adorable baby water dragon on my way to get lunch a short while ago.
Gently evicting a tiny lizard from our rental house. They were very chill about it.
A #Photography from #Brisbane's botanical gardens. The #LizardPosting is tack-sharp, which I'd have struggled to capture with my #Nikon D800. The autofocus square isn't filled with the subject at 24mm, and the D800 would back-focus on the AFS 14-24, regardless of AF fine tuning under those conditions.
The D850's AF autotune is magnificent, nailing a narrow focus at f2.8, and highlight-weighted metering gives rich velvety darks, and unblown lights.
I spotted lizards in the garden during a break in the rain so I got my Proper Camera and Long Lens out and did a photo shoot session with the 3-legged water skink, who was a very obliging model.
Its tail continues to regrow, but seems to be coming in with a bit of a kink at the transition. In lizards that can drop and regrow their tail the regrown tails always do look different, often having different colouration and lacking pattern, and they are usually shorter and stubbier than the original.
It seems like most of the adult water skinks that I see have a regrown tail. Being a medium sized lizard in a world full of birds and cats can be tough.
This little skink turned up in our dining room this evening, so I scooped them up and released them outside. I'm fairly sure this is a Weasel Skink (Saproscinus mustelinus), and I'm also fairly sure I've had to do exactly the same thing with a skink of the same species that appeared in the same room before.
When I was done with the gardening I saw the three-legged water skink, along with a four legged companion, checking out the small blue plastic plate that I used to feed them 4 weeks ago. They clearly remembered that last time the big human made an awful racket in the yard dog food appeared on that blue plate afterwards, and so as soon as I sat down they came out of hiding to check the plate.
Not wanting to leave them disappointed I went inside to get them something, and returned with some canned superworms. The two of them made a feast of those, and even had a Lady & the Tramp moment when they both tried to eat the same one.
