The social graph is our lives reduced to data.

It's our relationships, our friends, our enemies, our lovers.

It's our likes, dislikes, and indifferences.

The social graph is the food we eat, and the drinks we drink. It's the medicines we take. The drugs we use.

It's our strengths and our weaknesses. Our neuroses, our reactions, and avoidances.

Our Social Graphs, from the viewpoint of capitalism, is the last bit of gold in the mountains of data centers we call the Internet.

A single, unified social layer over the web has proven elusive. Our identities remain plural and scattered.

What is the social graph? I can speak from a marketing perspective. 1/🤷

"The announcement also raises questions about what this means for #Tumblr’s integration with the #opensocialweb, known as the fediverse. By migrating its infrastructure to #WordPress, it would have become a #federatedapp. #Mullenweg admits that was one of the arguments for making the move, but hints that it’s no longer a priority.
“…in the meantime, I think if there was a big push to implement fediverse, we would just do it on the Tumblr code base,” he said."

Rise and Fall of Grassroots #OpenWeb

To understand where the #Fediverse and the #OpenSocialWeb are heading, and how not to lose our way, we need to reflect on where we’ve come from. The history of grassroots #openweb activism offers both inspiration and hard lessons.Foundations are built by real people, social movements start local, they begin with people on the margins – those directly affected by injustice – taking action with the tools they have. In the late ’90s and early 2000s, tech projects like #Indymedia were the […]

"I want to go much further. I think #WordPress has all that's needed to be the OS of the #opensocialweb. We needed it and it's always been there, and I saw something that I want to show everyone else, that the web can grow from here, we should build on everything that the WordPress community has created. It's a lot stronger foundation that the other candidates for the basic needs of the open social web, imho."

"…the #opensocialweb is not just purely vibes and opinions, it is also shaped by technology and software. Technology sets the boundaries within opinions can be contested. Sometimes, technology comes along that changes what’s possible, and expands the understanding of what the open social web is. #Bounce is a great example, of how a new technology changes and expands the contested boundaries of what the Open Social Web is."

When someone claims software to be revolution, consider who is saying it. And ask yourself if they will allow the spoils of that revolution be shared with you if you're not a white dude.

Because historically, inevitably, irrevocably, the answer is a resounding and unflinching ✨No✨

Then ask why is the language of revolution used so often in regards to new tech? Because it works.

One thing I miss on social media is quality content and conversations. Where people would have civil discussions even in disagreements and point to reputable sources instead of “trust me bro” “ do your own research (aka YouTube). I’m sick of the purity tests where people generally on the same sides end up fighting because 1-3 differences. There needs to be a network and platform that emphasises this. #opensocialweb #fediverse #eq #quality
