Ok, new @mikrotik@mikrotik.social hAP ax³ is up and running!
A short review:
RouterOS is quite easy to set up as it comes with some sane defaults. With those defaults you don't have to touch the firewall rules, they're set to protect you from the scary outside world already. Opening ports can be done in the NAT rules, which is straightforward if you've ever done it on your ISP router.
To get internet from my ISP I had to add a VLAN with ID 300, then assign that VLAN to the WAN group. The DHCP client grabbed an IP for me and I was up and running. Assigning static DHCP leases is straightforward, so I did that before swapping my ISP router with the hAP.
WiFi was set up out of the box, but it seems Windows (still) doesn't understand that it should go for the fastest network, so it kept hopping between 2.4GHz and 5GHz, but after renaming the 2.4GHz network to something else that wasn't an issue anymore. It seems Steering can prevent that too?
WiFi performance seems comparable to my ISP provided router, though I'm no longer on 2Gbit/s anymore, I'm on 400mbit/s now, so there's no way I'd get a solid gigabit/s over WiFi anyway, though maybe I can set up iPerf locally?
Pet peeve: I liked the theme before I updated to the latest version better. Now I need more clicks to open menus :(
All in all, a solid choice, and it should have lower power usage than my ISP provided router, which is a great bonus.
