“The stakes could not be higher,” companies said in an appeal that comes before the court on Thursday. “Over two dozen cases have been filed by various states and municipalities across the country seeking to impose untold damages on energy companies ... and attempting to assert control over the nation’s energy policies .... This court should put a stop to it.”

Los Angeles Times · Oil industry asks Supreme Court to block climate change suits By David G. Savage

“This charge is meant for mafia and organised crime. This charge criminalises every act of support towards the group Letzte Generation. This creates an immense chilling effect on all climate protests in Germany.”

But the organised criminal groups knowingly peddling products that they knew to be prejudicial to the planet's wellbeing & to our survivability can carry on putting profit before people & planet.

Well, #ExxonKnew. #ShellKnew. They all knew, very early on and with astonishing accuracy, what the burning of their product will do. They not only kept on selling the product at great profit, they lied about it.

“This new set of documents further demonstrates that #Shell privately knew about the dangers its products would cause to the environment yet continued to deceive the public in pursuit of company profits. This is wrong and potentially illegal,” said U.S. Representative Ted Lieu of California.

"With more proof of Shell’s climate deception, Rep. Ted Lieu is once again urging the Department of Justice to look into whether fossil fuel companies broke the law."

Charleston gets early win in climate change lawsuit vs. ‘Big Oil’

By Clare Fieseler cfieseler@postandcourier.com

Jul 8, 2023

"A federal judge has given the city of Charleston an early win in its climate change lawsuit against '#BigOil' by ruling the case will stay in #SouthCarolina, where the city wants the issue fought.

"U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel agreed on July 5 that Charleston’s bid seeking to make #FossilFuel companies pay for #climate damages could proceed in state court, where it was initially filed.

"City officials welcomed the decision, which some legal experts say creates a more favorable stage in arguing that the multiple #oil and #gas companies which have operated in the U.S. for decades knew of the #environmentally #hazardous affects of their products.

"'We agree wholeheartedly with him,' said Chloe Field, a city spokeswoman. 'It is time to move towards trial in the Court of Common Pleas where we filed this case nearly three years ago.'

"In 2020, the city of Charleston filed the lawsuit against two dozen major #oil and #pipeline companies, alleging their products and the spread of misinformation about #FossilFuels have caused #ClimateChange leading to repetitive and disastrous #flooding in the city.

"Nationwide, almost two dozen state and local governments are pursuing similar litigation against oil companies seeking climate-related damages. The only government in the South to file such a case is the city of Charleston."
