“The Letter” from the Box Tops’ 1967 debut album The Letter/Neon Rainbow. Lead singer Alex Chilton was just 16 when it was recorded in Memphis, produced by Dan Penn. Chilton would go on to become co-founder of Big Star in 1971. #alexchilton #boxtops #memphismusic #vinyl #bigstar

The Letter / Happy Times
1967 Canada 7” single
“The Letter”, man.
Alex Chilton and the gang take one minute and fifty eight seconds to say everything you’d ever need to know, while The Grateful Dead took 48 minutes to say absolutely nothing.
Written by the great Wayne Carson, it’s a perfect song; a wonderful slice of white boy soul.
If only the world knew what Alex Chilton had for them on the horizon.
They’d find out soon enough.

...All the children going places
Wearing masks upon their faces
What they find are Mars Bars traces
And their bags, the Butterfinger graces,
And the night is love.

"Alex using his 16 yr old voice which sounded like his 50 yr old voice when it was recorded"
Having to scan receipts to count for #BoxTops is a problem both because it's an invasion of #privacy and because not everyone is rich enough to be able to afford a compatible #phone. The second thing is a bigger issue because that can affect poorer schools, which are disproportionately minority-based (usually meaning Black people) due to financial discrimination by the state and stuff.
YouTube comment:
"Big Star's Radio City album is in my top 10 of all time, right up there with The Beatles, The Who, The Stones, Miles Davis, etc. But it always strikes me funny that Alex seemed to enjoy himself more playing these Box Top shows than his Big Star reunion ones. I do know that he almost loathed playing Big Star songs, yet he appears to still have a fondness for the Box Top stuff."
