Turns out #BuddyPress doesn't consider subscribers to be users on a blog. So if you are using your main blog as a way to authenticate users, they will show up a 'null' in certain BuddyPress functions.

There is a documented way around this by filtering subscribers as users. But it wasn't clear that was what caused the problem. Once I figured that out, I think my users are no longer getting dropped from the main blog.

Good thing to fix before finals start.
