I was appreciating the old school forum again tonight. The sense of timeless response where the conversation hasn’t already moved on because the topic of the post is still the topic.
It felt slow. In a world of instant everything…it felt nice.

The WrongPlanet web forum for Autistic people is experiencing daily outages. The performance slows to a crawl. It's a vexation. It's this old #PHPBB-style forum. #actuallyAutistic @actuallyautistic
#AskFedi once again, as I do.
What's a good #forum software to use?
I'm already familiar with #phpBB and #Discourse; want to know what else is out there that y'all actually would use and recommend.
@stefano @_elena A really decent, performant #OpenSource forum software such as #Flarum, #PhpBB, or #Discourse, is right there. Do any of your 350k subscribers have a #RaspberryPi 5 lying around (wth an NVME drive), and have expertise? Flarum or PhpBB would run performantly on it for a huge number of concurrent users. Where is your #OpenSource spirit, to take things into your own hands?
I just launched a new phpBB forum. The rollout was super smooth despite my doing it via git deployment. I feel like I’ve reached a comfortable level with my Nginx configuration skill.
The hardest part was setting up Postfix with Domain Keys and Sender Policy Framework correctly.
Is it genious or lazy that I wrote a Python script that looks at phpBB forum threads based on configuration file and then shows a macos notification alert when there's new posts?
I don't know but now I have one of those running on my machine.
@phpc I was pumped to add PHP to my first website in my teens and create reusable menus (later leading up to adding security vulnerabilities before learning how to sanitize database inputs ). I had fun modding phpBB in the aughts (it’s still around and I’ve come back around to it).
I don’t think I quite expected to build a career upon it (shout out to Drupal (and some Joomla along the way in freelance work). And here I am, maintaining Wordpress sites too.
Future of OSU Open Source Lab in Jeopardy
"Over the past several years, we have been operating at a deficit due to a decline in corporate donations" ... "recent changes in university funding makes our current funding model no longer sustainable."
"Unless we secure $250,000 in committed funds, the OSL will shut down later this year."
https://osuosl.org/blog/osl-future/
OSL provides hosting for over 500 Free and Open Source Projects from all over the world.
The Oregon State University's Open Source Lab needs your help !
We at #Inkscape rely on them for hosting our website , mailing lists
, mail servers
and DNS
.
They are also a host for many other open source projects - e.g. #Drupal, #Gentoo Linux, #Debian, #Fedora, #phpBB, #OpenID, #Buildroot/#Busybox, #Cinc, …
Please consider donating to them so they can keep their services running for all of us!
@luceos ah, #Flarum is really nice! My only gripe is that it doesn't work without JS (interaction, not just reading) since I browse the web mostly using elinks. This is a similar issue I have with #Discourse.
(interestingly I cannot post on #PHPBB on #elinks either, haven't investigated why. Vanilla without JS strangely takes 10x longer for the post request).
You're right storage is cheap. Just checked, Flarum is 65MB (16MB Flarum itself, the rest as deps).
@wyatt I'm curious which console's homebrew scene you're subposting about. The communities I'm in use a standard protocol.

Something I've come to appreciate on the #Fediverse is the distinct lack of scolding about searching for topics before posting about them like we did in ye olden days of #phpbb and the like*.
Obviously some of that is likely due to the nature of #Mastodon (being the largest of Fedi variants) not really being capable of a particularly robust search function until fairly recently.
Now that most Mastodon servers *do* offer much broader searches with ElasticDB and etc., we *still* overall seem to treat each other civilly with regards to such matters.
On the other hand, posts often vanish or are simply not locally present on a given server for a variety reasons, hence tools like #FediFetcher being created to compensate for such issues, so perhaps that has an impact as well.
Regardless of the cause or lack thereof, I'm glad we can post into the void and not really have to deal with "Read the board rules, search before you post or burn in a fire pit of hell!! Don't duplicate topics! Nyaaaaah!!"
If you ask me, this place is really quite magical.
* - yes, I know phpbb still exists. AOL also exists, but I wouldn't say it's a particularly relevant in comparison to the Fediverse
I found and signed up for a new-to me #synth #forum! Mod-Wiggler
https://www.modwiggler.com/forum/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=82715
https://listography.com/GothFvck/about_me/where_im_at
Does anyone actually look at or have me bookmarked on #Listography?
Let me know! Perhaps if people do, I'll make more of an effort to keep the thing tidy. lol
Hello everyone, I'm Mountain, I'm a new Mastodon user. I run a phpBB board for women needing a non-reddit community in these uncertain times (https://twox.prep.gameplayer.club) as well as the r/grimezs subreddit, which has documented the musician Grimes' ties to technofascism in the US. My profile picture is AI generated slop, please don't let that deter you from following this account.
