Dendari

I want to deGoogle a little.
What I'd like to set up is a simple next cloud/own cloud server that I can access from outside my home and automatically back up my photos. With a backup off site daily. Id also like to create accounts for a family to backup phones and be able to share documents with friends. I have about 90% of the skills I need to do this but need a good set of tutorials to follow.
Who do you recommend?

@dendari If you are already unfamiliar with server management and security I would not recommend exposing your next/owncloud server publicly.
A better solution would be to use VPN to connect your devices and just have family members have a vpn connection for backups.
Tailscale is a very simple way to do this. It only sends the data that is required such as your nexcloud connection over it, leaving it on all the time doesnt route your entire devices traffic over it, or expose your server on WAN

@dendari If you are looking for a dead simple install there is always the Nextcloud snap package.
The official Docker image is always a great way to get setup as well and helps minimize dependency issues.

@dendari That is pretty much what I did some years ago and I am still happy with it. But I don't know a tutorial that covers exactly this scenario. But there are tutorials for each tool you will need. So are you planing to run a home server? Or do you already have one? With a fixed IP?

@romix I have a home server running truenas scale. I don't have a static IP, I have duckdns but that seems to be one too many layer of complexity for me so maybe I should get a static ip

@dendari My ISP offers the fixed IP for free. So that is why I have one.

@dendari
Try AIO - that is All In One. I can't remember the details but it's Docker on Debian with containers for Apache, Nextcloud, database etc all set up in a single downloadable image. Best of all it has an AIO dashboard as a webpage with a simple container upgrade tool. I'm a muppet but even I set it up without any hassle.
