Analog Computing: The Silent Revolution Powering AI And Saving The Planet
Analog Computing: The Silent Revolution Powering AI And Saving The Planet
Sooo.
AI will soon demand more energy than the world can currently supply. Unlike AI, biology solves problems efficiently, without massive energy consumption—our brains are not digital computers.

Hybridization still in progress; spot the odd one out !

Hybridization in progress ! I had not done this for a loooong time, but I really enjoy prototyping like this.
Dear all, I hope to embark on a small US tour in the spring, so far with dates in Boston, Buffalo, College Station and Dallas. Between those last two I still have a gap in my schedule from Thursday the 27th to Sunday the 30th of March, would anybody have a suggestion for a place to screen my most recent film or give a talk or - even better - both, preferably in Texas or in a state not far from Texas ? 1/2
From the "Liberate the Machines !" book: an adder module from one of the first commercial analog computing systems, manufactured by George Philbrick Researches in the early 1950's. From my own collection, picture by Isabelle Vigier.

Selecting images for the 'Liberate the Machines !' book: this is from August 2017 when I first encountered chaos in an analog computing patch. I was trying to reproduce the system that Yoshisuke Ueda used in 1961.

Getting back into working on #83: algorithmically evolving analog computing patches to produce HD electronic image sequences. Trying to channel the specific anarchistic potential of evolvable hardware into the production of images.

"Even if we gave the B-29 mechanical fire control computer memory and an arbitrary amount of time, it could not run Doom."

“Synapses store information, but they also help compute. For certain computations, such as deep neural network inference, co-locating compute and memory in PCM ... overcomes the von Neumann bottleneck...”

Listened to this Story by Charles Platt on WIRED from last year (2023) earlier today and found it amazingly insightful and enlightening about current - and very likely also future - technological developments around "Analog Computing"
To summarize it with his words:
"Analog is dead.
Long live analog."
I really recommend this for anyone interested in current and future technological developments - also, but not exclusively involving "A.l.".

Brain-inspired analog computing platform. Today’s digital computing based on silicon transistor technology and the standard Von Neumann architecture is running up against processing speed and energy-efficiency limits.
Quite the lengthy (yet interesting) introduction to this paper:
"Nanosecond protonic programmable resistors for analog deep learning" by Onen et al. 2024 https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.abp8064
... authored by MIT Prof. Bilge Yildiz among others, who just completed her sabbatical year in Cambridge, at the chemistry department and in our #Pembroke1347 college. Was such a wonderful visitor – her research is fascinating.
@ianbobmorris I keep waiting to hear they are using analog tech for AI. NVidia hardware has the Von Neumann Bottleneck--seems like analog computing could get around it. https://www.techopedia.com/definition/14630/von-neumann-bottleneck #analogcomputing #analog
Ihr wollt mal einen Analogrechner programmieren, wisst aber nicht woher nehmen, wenn nicht stehlen? Well … könnta kaufen. Bei der Firma Anabrid. In Deutschland.
#analogcomputing #that
