#Florida: Donations wanted for #OrlandoFL and #JacksonvilleFL #LibraryOfThings!
"The #CenterForBiologicalDiversity fights not only to protect wildlife and wild lands in Florida but also to address the underlying causes of the extinction crisis, including the excessive production and consumption of new products.
"That’s why we’re excited to announce that we’re working with #Shareable and other partners to establish Library of Things pilot projects in Orlando and Jacksonville.
"A Library of Things is a shared community resource where useful items can be borrowed just like books that are in circulation for years, reducing the demand to produce new goods that destroy habitat, generate greenhouse gases, create pollution, and harm wildlife.
"Sharing also disrupts the current U.S. economic model that demands endless growth through the constant purchasing of new things. It challenges the traditional consumerist mindset that drives overproduction and leads to items getting thrown away after only a few uses.
"You can support this effort by donating items from the library’s wish lists. Whether it's a bicycle repair kit for someone who bikes for transportation, kitchen items for a new university student, or a generator for emergency preparedness, every item counts. By donating, you’ll help neighbors save money and push back against the culture of consumerism.
Here's how it works
"The Jacksonville Library of Things pilot, located at University of North Florida dormitories, is looking for donations of board games, kitchen items, phone chargers and tools to be used by students living in the dorms, based on a needs assessment conducted with students in partnership with the University.
"The Central Florida Tool Library (serving Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties) is seeking donations related to disaster preparation and response, as well as home repair and maintenance. These items were identified based on conversations between community members and our partner, #CentralFloridaMutualAid.
"Each wish list notes whether the item can be gently used or refurbished or must be new. (Certain products must be new for the libraries to ensure they meet safety and fire code standards. But purchasing these items once to be shared among the community prevents each future borrower from buying more.)
"Links to secondhand and refurbished sites are included where possible. The wish lists also provide a desired quantity of each item. Once the maximum number of items is claimed, you’ll see the request has been fulfilled. The mailing address to send the products for inclusion in the Library of Things can be found in the wish list."

Free fixes are back! The #ToolLibrary expands its #DareToRepair Café program in 2025
By Darren Cotton, February 3, 2025
"Have broken stuff? Instead of throwing it out, consider attending one of The Tool Library’s free Dare to #RepairCafés this February or March.
"These events cut waste and build community: At each Dare to Repair, people can bring in broken objects like lamps, vacuums, bicycles, toys, clothing, sewing machines, PCs, laptops, and small electronics to be repaired — free of charge — by volunteer fixers. By following along during repairs, attendees can learn the skills they need to fix things on their own.
"The Tool Library, in partnership with #BuffaloRecycles, will host two Dare to Repair Cafés per month in 2025 — adding weeknight events to existing weekend programming — thanks to new funding from the New York State Pollution Prevention Institute and State Sen. Sean Ryan.
March 2025 dates:
- Saturday, March 1, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lancaster Municipal Building, 5423 Broadway, Lancaster, 14086
- Thursday, March 13, from 5-7 p.m. at the Delavan-Grider Community Center, 877 E. Delavan Ave., Buffalo, 14215
"Anyone interested in bringing appliances or household items to be repaired is strongly encouraged to fill out the registration form in advance."

A visit to the Greenpoint Tool Library: repair economies, object lending, and new production paradigms in times of climate change.
https://themaintainers.org/toolib/
At Levenshulme Repair Cafe today, I repaired:
-A lamp - replaced the brass lamp holder.
-A musical bird in a cage - the mechanism needed relocating, so the bird would move, but sadly, no chirps.
- A worktop oven - lots of loose spade connectors inside! Squeezed them tight.
- A food mixer - a micro switch burnt out, but it was safe to bypass it.
-A broken lampshade - I will braze it in my workshop.
-An old egg timer - I failed to make it ping again.
-A rice cooker - chap had been chasing a red herring fault on the indicator light pcb. The fault was mechanical. A lever wouldn't engage a micro switch properly.
It was a hectic one this morning! I lent out many tools and consumables, and other repairers were non stop too!
I also donated a Tacwise 400ELS nail gun to the Tool Library. Hardly used and no longer needed in my workshop.
Does anything like a federated e-commerce/shopping platform exist?
Or possibly a federated library platform, for distributed borrowing?
Been chatting with @adrigen about his idea for a local-but-federated gift economy platform, and we were wondering if anyone has already started on something like this..
Yet another neighbor mentioned all the special-purpose tools he'd bought for home projects, not knowing that I've started a tool library for exactly that reason. So all of us "tool junkies" are going to get together and make a list of these that we're willing to share out.
Alright! Meet and greet went really well. Both the Executive Director of all the libraries and the director of my specific branch were very interested in building out the tool library.
The Executive Director gave me her card and asked me to email her. She'll get me in touch with the project lead who would oversee this.
I'll reach out to them and see what the current plans are and if there are any obstacles to address.
This is exciting!!!!
Executive Director of our local libraries is doing a meet and greet with the public tonight.
Figure I'll head down to the library and join in on the conversation.
Now that the #seedLibrary is set up and thriving, I'm really interested in setting up a #toolLibrary.
We have a decent #LibraryOfThings where you can rent GoPros, audio equipment, mobile hotspots, various games, and some tools. But we really can build out our Tool Library more.
Think about it. Unless you're a hobbyist or a tradesperson, you really only need a drill when doing specific repairs or hanging a new picture or when moving, etc. Imagine just being able to go down to the library to grab the tools you need when you need them and then returning them for your neighbor to use.
I'll let y'all know how it goes!
Dear _ ,
What can I do, to contribute to the future I envision? I suppose that I could participate in the local tool library & the Museum & Archives.
I imagine this city evolving into a centre of knowledge; rare book collections; tools for DIYers; & (soon-to-be) antique machines, associated manuals, & blueprints. In the present, I could find & support those community spaces that are preserving knowledge for future generations
#Lethbridge #libraries #ToolLibrary #CommunityKnowledge
@IceNine This is another huge reason I have been fighting for #RightToRepair legislation in #Canada for almost 2 decades!! I support local #ToolLibrary but also want rights to repair legislation to be enacted & enforced.
Many of my farmer friends still keep machinery that doesn't require expensive parts. Some have also opted to return to hand & horse plowing.
Gonna start a Tool library.
An Alameda Tool Lending Library is in the works! Thushan Amarasiriwardena announces that potential locations include Jean Sweeney Open Space Park and Alameda Point.
https://alamedapost.com/features/alameda-life/alameda-tool-lending-library-project-seeks-input/
Okay one more food related thought for today, apparently I have a backlog. You know how there are tool libraries and that’s more sustainable than everyone buying tools individually? I was thinking we should have community kitchen gadget libraries. For example, I would love to try using an icecream maker but I neither have the space, nor would I use it often enough. Does something like this exist already? #ToolLibrary #Sharingeconomy #sustainability #Food
Shoutout to #Vancouver #ToolLibrary: awesome place.
Now I don't need to buy all these weird tools I'll use once in my life, like a bottom bracket tool or a sound level meter.
@JosephDubonnet We have a #ToolLibrary in #VictoriaBC & it's amazing! Every community should have one. Ours is mostly run by volunteers & donations from public & members. Community members can borrow tools, after registering as a member & you get discounts on a wide range of practical hands-on workshop classes too.
