In both #art and #engineering, one must be able to both #see and #feel things that might not be there (yet).
We were able to "see" the outlines of the #scroll surface from #imageScans of #Vignola's sketches in https://pixelfed.social/p/Splines/793169876757012827 and https://pixelfed.social/p/Splines/793215298082967733.
Vignola's images are on a 2-dimensional surface, as are the outlines we extracted from them. We believe the scroll surface also exists, but it is not yet manifest in 3-dimensional space. So, like a visually impaired person, we try to "feel" our way to the scroll surface using the outlines as our #walkingStick.
This diagram is identical to that in https://pixelfed.social/p/Splines/793493316852849994 but with the rear ends of the horizontal #primaryCurves marked with R1, R5, and R3, which are paired with F1, F5, and F3, respectively.
We know that the scroll surface must #touch the tangent points T1, T2, and so on in front, as well corresponding tangent points in the rear (not shown here to reduce clutter).
In https://pixelfed.social/p/Splines/792906324854792619, I mentioned that a scroll starts with a volute in front and is #modulated by as many as six volutes of different shapes and sizes as it reaches the back, with the scroll surface tightly hugging the volutes at EACH contact point in ALL 3 dimensions. In other words, it is not sufficient for the scroll surface to "touch" the #volute #spirals just in the front and rear. It must also "hug" the intermediate #modulatingSpirals. I will first show this technique with 4 modulating spirals using rectangles M, N, P, Q, and R as their frame, and add more later on.
Intuitively, we know that if we use curve F3-R3 as our walking stick on the straight vertical extrusion of that curve, we will feel the scroll surface *somewhere* on that extrusion along every point from front to back. We can narrow it down further by excluding portions above and below as we approach rectangle R in the rear.

Every morning, I've been gradually working on a walking stick. It's the first I've ever made, so it's been great practice.
I just finished the wood burning, and now I am going to try leather wrapping the handle (another thing I've never done before).

I got a "Step2Gold Ta-Da Cane-Chair" via eBay this week and I like it a lot. It turns into a chair in about 1 second and back into a walking stick in the same amount of time. Today, I tied this little pouch to it to add pockets
The walking stick on the left is what I use, the one on the right is what I see in a lot of cane self defense videos, but I don't think I’ve ever seen anyone actually using that style. So I want to train with what I actually use…anyone walk with one like on the right?

This stick insect was not as well hidden as he believed himself to be. I assume, from the fact that he is missing two legs, that he has made this mistake before.
I offered to move him to a safer place, but he spazzed out and ran into a pile of bricks.

I've very occasionally (maybe 3-4 times total) used a #WalkingStick due to chronic foot/leg #pain over the last few years.
This month, as I've travelled and pain has gotten worse, I've used it more. In Wellington it was very much a non-issue. No remarks on it, seat offered on a bus without comment, no note when entering #wwc games.
There's no reason that mobility equipment has to be ugly. These are walking sticks to help with balance or with pain.
If you think that this is a trivial issue, the appearance of mobility equipment can affect the degree of ableism/ageism that other people inflict on the person using the mobility equipment. Also, far too many falls are due to people who won't use their mobility equipment because they worry that it makes them "look old".

Finished! #walkingstick ferrule is coming. Davidbaby wanted a fighting handle in case he’s attacked by any wild animals whilst walking. The commission was very clear.
Go off to my usual disability aids supplier to order a spare non tumble tumbler and another of the red plate guards I use so very often. Both absolutely essential disability aids so I can manage meals. And trust me to nab some more things! Getting a poncho for my wheelchair, and a blue tartan stick (made in Somerset!).
