On this day 16 years ago, our distributed computing project @einsteinathome began searching for radio pulsars for the first time.
Previously, volunteers were able to donate computing time on their computers to search for gravitational waves from rotating neutron stars (still mysterious remnants of exploded stars).
Starting 24 March 2009, new applications were available that allowed Einstein@Home volunteers to search Arecibo radio telescope data for radio pulsars (special neutron stars) in close binary systems.

This month the volunteer distributed computing project @einsteinathome turns 20 years old.
The Einstein@Home volunteers have already discovered more than 90 new neutron stars, and we hope to discover many more in the future. Our long-term goal is the first direct detection of continuous gravitational waves.

I was initially disappointed that my new #BOINC set-up was only running #EinsteinAtHome, but nowadays #RamanujanMachine is running a mile a minute! Laundry today. Still waiting for that fabled ecstasy to show up beforehand though. I keep dreaming about my infernal former workplace The Moronic Inferno. 'Tis my not being prepared for a test!
I tried #foldingathome and #boinc on my M2 MacBook Air to see how they work without fans.
None of them use the efficient cores of the #applesilicon CPUs, even #einsteinathome, which supposedly is written for these.
#apptamer can force #foldingathome but not #boinc to run on the efficient cores and #primegrid can use the GPU.
Makes me wonder again how green is #distributedcomputing compared to projects building or renting larger, more efficient computers. #greencomputing
Set aside the problematic equipment, dusted off Theseus, OEM installed #LinuxMint (via DVD!) and renamed it Monad. Monad is running #BOINC #SiDock now. Couldn’t connect to #EinsteinAtHome so the pulsar data will have to wait.
I have #Tor running nicely on #Atmos, and #BOINC running on #Theseus. All is in abeyance on the latter, as either servers are "probably" down or no master scheduler/no tasks sent. #EinsteinAtHome, #RosettaAtHome, and #SiDockAtHome, only one of you shall be running on a two cpu machine, so step up.
Home office cold? Try running some #BOINC projects on all those computers you've got sitting around.
