#hashtagspam

1 post1 participant0 posts today

#Hashtagspam is an act where you mention hashtags based on unrelated topics, like talking about general stuff, not about your country, example: mentioning hashtag America but talking about life you had in Germany, or topic that's in the hashtag but you keep posting over & over, like using that to talk about weird things going on in Berlin, you keep posting, posting & posting, same goes for #mutualAidRequest related, begging despite it's a bad act considered part of Hashtag Spam. @mutualaid

It's not the number of #Hashtags per se, it's their clear relevance to the post (text or image) at hand

(I'll name names...)

#Pixelfed seems to have a cultural bias toward long lists of hashtags, many of which have no direct or even indirect relevance to the specific image in the post -- sometime using 15 or 20 or more hashtags

It's just simple #HashtagSpam

At least PIxelfed has gotten away from the original format of one hashtag per line -- now they're all in a block

Still too many are simply irrelevant to the photo subject, the camera used, or the post-processing technique -- they're just noise

Is there really no way to fight hashtag spam on Mastodon? I can block or mute individual accounts, but if I follow a hashtag I see all those accounts in my feed, even though they spray hashtags with no thought.

There must be a solution. Please.

#HashtagSpam

Bin. Genervt. Davon.
Sorry, aber das musste mal grade sein. 🤷‍♀️😕

Mastodon Tip #1:

Hashtags are great to find, follow and filter topics.

Place them at the very end of your toot, so your helpful list can automatically shorten in timelines by apps like Tusky.

So nobody has to complain about to many of them... 😉

#hashtagspam is a one of many the social media annoyances that can be easily eliminated: Just have servers refuse any post that uses more than a few hashtags. You dont even have to check if they are relevant and correlated with the post content.

Some people will abuse any facility if it confers them a perceived or real advantage without a penalty cost. But for the rest of us this only raises the noise and reduces the value of the channel.
