Should we do something native to the Fediverse?

And what would that actually look like? Let’s be honest about what the #Fediverse is. Despite all the code and standards talk, the heart of the Fediverse is anarchism – not in the chaos sense, but in the older meaning:

The letter A for anarkhia (‘without ruler’), circled by an O that stands for order or organization.

We have plenty of the A with decentralization, voluntary cooperation and resistance to imposed authority. But where’s the O? Of clear coordination, transparent […]

Playing around with #GitLab for the first time in a while this morning* and wow I prefer it to #github in many ways.

Little things like the text editor (specifically the way you can switch from markdown to rendered text) and the option to mark issues as confidential.

* I just signed up to git.coop through #WebArchitects (webarchitects.coop/git#free)

WebarchitectsCo-operative Git HostingWebarchitects provides free, unlimited git hosting for source code, issues and documentation for members of our co-operative on our GitLab CE server at git.coop. We can also provide maintained virtual private servers running GitLab CE for clients.

Next up for me at the #CoopCongress today (maybe mute this hashtag now if this isn't your jam 😅) we have:

"What's next for us owning our own tech? Let's talk about #CoTech"

> Hosted by John Robb, musician, author and campaigner; and Natasha Natarajan, Outlandish Co-operative, and Richard Rowley from Agile Collective, who are both part of CoTech – a network of ethical tech, digital and creative co-operatives.

Continued thread

On this month-long journey I met with and interviewed six workers coops, five of which are tech-related. They are vastly different, each operating within their unique context.
19.coop
syndicats.co
teknologisk.coop
robur.coop
ogtall.no
kbhck.dk (bike shop)

I met with the workers' union which has Denmarks first 30-hours collective bargaining agreement at/with a tech workers coop.
prosa.dk (union)
tetrabit.coop (coop)

I met with two data collectives; democratic organizations which among other things run digital services (matrix, nextcloud, etc) for its members.
data.coop
ukrudt.net

I also met three hackerspaces and one makerspace.
labitat.dk
hamburg.ccc.de
hackeriet.no

Expect a blog post (particularly about the coop related stuff) or extended fedi thread some time this summer.
Feel free to @ me if it takes a while.

#Introduction: I thought I should post and pin this again since moving to my own instance. I would appreciate the boosts to get this federated as mush as possible.

I've been writing software for 25+ years spanning many different industries until landing in my current final role as founding member of @limeleaf@social.coop #techcoop where I am doing some consulting projects in #GoLang and #RustLang while also building a few products such as https://apply.coop, https://limecast.net, https://blueskydirectory.com, and other federated/decentralized stuff. I try to get into some #HareLang every once in a while for fun as well. I believe in #opensource, #privacy, #diversity, #equity, and #fairness in all parts of life. You can read more about me on my website and reach out to me anytime you want!

Thanks for anyone who boosts this!

In his _Letter from a Birmingham Jail_, #MartinLutherKing emphasizes the importance of #EconomicJustice alongside #SocialJustice and criticizes how white supremacy is happy to take wealth from the hands of Black folks as customers while refusing to provide them with good jobs.

I just ran the numbers for one of my tech #WorkerCooperatives with open-comp + opt-in for self-identifying along several axes.

Non-white team members comprise 53% of our staff and receive ~56% of our total compensation.

While we have limited public repositories on GitHub for convenience the majority of our open source repos are on Codeberg because of how it is governed as a democratic community-driven, non-profit software development platform.

You'll be seeing more repos as time goes on mostly for Rust, Go, and simple HTML/CSS web apps.

One thing I think could really help is a tech co-op incubator - a Co-Up, so to speak - that helps people wanting to start new co-ops with finding seed funding, as well as things like advice on legal structures, book-keeping and financial reporting, and so on. As well as just creating a pool of like-minded people who've already done it and made it work. Who new co-op founders can reach out to for, support and mentoring when things get tough.
