Nepenthes gracilis, a clone I’ve nicknamed “Shadow.” A widespread and variable species found throughout much of Southeast Asia, typically producing small pitchers on long tangled vines. This one originated from Bornean parentage, and is one of the coveted “black” variants; lower pitchers get deep purple to almost black, spotted with a couple shades of lighter purple that make a dappled shadowy appearance, and even the leaves flush with purple. Uppers like this image are paler, but still that mottled purple-black color overall.

Nepenthes sumatrana
A giant from a restricted range on the western coast of Sumatra, capable of making chunky ovoid lower pitchers the size of a football, and upper pitchers that are trumpet-shaped and can exceed 15 inches in height. Best known for its flashy candy-striped peristome, this species inhabits primarily shady forest margins in spots where other pitchers can’t quite compete due to the lower light levels and sometimes stifling humidity.

Newly opened pitcher on Nepenthes platychila x robcantleyi. Uppers are perfectly funnel shaped and develop these massive flaring lips…though they only stay flared for a short while before folding back around the sides of the mouth. Though stripes sometimes form my plant stays pretty green overall; others may develop more color.

Nepenthes leonardoi, a rare ultra-endemic species of pitcher plant from the mountains of Palawan, Philippines. All-black clones seen in the wild made headlines, as did the naming of the plant after a prominent botanist in the region who was unfortunately shot while surveying plants by a militia group. Pitchers can reach almost 6 inches tall, with prominent teeth.

My four seedgrown Cephalotus follicularis, Australian Pitcher Plant. A carnivore completely unrelated to all others worldwide (it’s related to Oxalis and Magnolias more than any carnivorous plant), it has a completely unique structure and unique seasonal growth habit (pitchers are naturally produced in warmer summer weather mostly, while cooler winters trigger flat photosynthetic leaves).

I received this highlands pitcher plant (Nepenthes glandulifera) as a gift at the end of November and it is growing like mad. I'm waiting for the oldest pitcher to fully die back before I trim it off the plant, which detracts from its appearance, but the 3 newest pitchers are growing quickly and ready to take its place. I was worried about caring for this plant that loves moisture because I live in such an arid environment.
